John Sanders is an American actor and voice actor. His stage work includes Broadway productions of Peter and the Starcatcher, Matilda the Musical, and Groundhog Day, as well as the national tour of Peter and the Starcatcher, in which he played Black Stache.

Early life and education

[edit]

Sanders studied theater arts at the University of Oregon, where he worked in the Pocket Playhouse and attended the Clark Honors College.[1].

Theatre

[edit]

After university, Sanders worked in Chicago theatre for eleven years[2]. He received Joseph Jefferson Award nominations for his performances in Burying the Bones[3] and Arrangement for Two Violas[4].

Sanders joined the Broadway production of Peter and the Starcatcher as an understudy for Black Stache and later played the role in the national tour[5][6]. His touring performance received attention in several regional and national outlets[7][8][9]. Charles McNulty of the Los Angeles Times highlighted the character's hand-loss scene, while the Minnesota Star Tribune described Sanders as "over-the-top funny" in the role[7], and BroadwayWorld called him "one of the greats of the current stage." [10]

He subsequently appeared in Matilda the Musical on Broadway, and he originated the role of Ned Ryerson in the Broadway production of Groundhog Day[1][11]. Writing in The New Yorker, Michael Schulman noted that the musical expanded Ryerson with a backstory that gave the character added poignancy[12].

In 2017, Sanders played director Stuart Vaughan in Richard Nelson's Illyria at the Public Theater[13][14][15]. The Village Voice called Vaughan Joseph Papp's "most valuable artistic collaborator" and wrote that Sanders tempered the role's careerism with a "wistful ache"[16]

Screen and voice work

[edit]

His television work includes Sucession, Billions, Elementary and Iron Fist[17]. He portrayed architect Stanford White in HBO's The Gilded Age[18]. His voice work has included commercials and video games characters in Marvel Rivals, Minecraft and Batman.
