Jesse Dee (born 25 October 1994) is an Australian professional rugby league footballer who plays for the York Knights in the Super League. He joined the Knights in 2023 and is currently a co-captain of the team alongside Liam Harris. Dee made his debut in the Championship for the Newcastle Thunder in 2022, having previously played for Illawarra in the NSW Cup and the Mackay Cutters in the Queensland Cup. He primarily plays in the second-row, but has also played centre and halfback.[2]
Background
[edit]Dee played his junior rugby league for the Warilla Gorillas in the Group 7 competition.[3] Originally a halfback, Dee went on to play first grade with the Gorillas, briefly playing alongside future UFC star, Alex Volkanovski.[4]
During his time with the Gorillas, Dee played in Grand Finals in 2013, 2014 and 2016, but never quite managed to win a premiership.[5] He also spent a season with the Moss Vale Dragons in Group 6 in 2015.[6]
Playing career

[edit]Initially playing with Shellharbour Sharks in 2017, he got his first opportunity to play at a higher level when he was signed by Illawarra in the NSW Cup.[7] Dee made his debut in round 7 of the NSW Cup, in a 20-14 win over the Western Suburbs Magpies at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.[8]
Dee started the next four games playing in the centres until he suffered a fractured elbow against Newtown Jets in round 11.[7] Despite the injury setback, he would manage to make it back by round 16 and continued to feature regularly for the remainder of the season. Dee finished the season with 14 appearances as Illawarra made it to the semi-finals.
Mackay Cutters
[edit]Dee made the move to Queensland in 2018, joining the Western Suburbs Tigers in the Mackay & District Rugby League competition. His form with the Tigers earned him a call up for the Mackay Cutters in the Queensland Cup. He made three appearances for the Cutters during the season, with his debut coming in round 7 in a loss to the Redcliffe Dolphins.[9]
Although he would have to wait for further opportunities at Queensland Cup level, Dee was selected for the Queensland Rangers, a representative team comprised of the top A-Grade players from around the state.[10] Dee played for the Rangers in the interstate match against the NSW Pioneers in 2018 and would go on to captain the Queensland side in 2019.[3]
