Jeremy Lapainis (born January 17, 1982) is a Canadian former stock car racing driver whose competitive career spanned from 2000 to 2009. Born in Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, Lapainis competed primarily in Western Canada and in the Southeastern United States. He won numerous feature events across several disciplines, including International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) Modifieds, Late Model Stock cars and Super Late Models. He is best known for capturing the 2005 NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Late Model track championship at Edmonton International Raceway.[1]
Racing career
[edit]IMCA Modifieds and Open-Wheel Success (2000–2002)
[edit]Lapainis began competing in full-scale motorsport in 2000, racing open-wheel IMCA Modifieds at Edmonton International Raceway (EIR) in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. In his debut season, he scored his first career feature win during EIR's signature "Open Wheels of Thunder" special event, ultimately finishing third in the track's championship point standings. His performance earned him the 2000 IMCA Canada Modified Rookie of the Year honors.
In 2001, Lapainis expanded his schedule regionally, finishing third in the IMCA Canada National Standings. During this season, he claimed two feature event victories at EIR and an additional two feature wins at Hythe Motor Speedway. He also finished as the runner-up in the annual Roy Ross Memorial Race.
The 2002 season saw Lapainis establish a historic milestone at EIR, breaking the track's official single-lap qualifying record with a time of 13.11 seconds. This track record stood for twelve years until officials repaved the EIR facility in 2014. Additionally, he claimed two feature wins at Race City Speedway in Calgary, Alberta, and was honored with the Buck Heberling Memorial Award for Sportsmanship. At age 20, he made his debut in a Super Late Model, finishing 13th out of a highly competitive field at the prestigious Montana 200, hosted at Raceway Park in Kalispell, Montana.
Late Model Touring and Championship Season (2003–2005)
[edit]In 2003, Lapainis transitioned fully into late model stock cars, joining the regional AC Delco Late Model Tour. He captured the series' Rookie of the Year title, highlighted by a second-place finish during the tour's stop at EIR. He also secured a podium finish (3rd) during the Newalta Late Model Series events at Race City Speedway.
During the 2004 season, Lapainis won the Canada Custom Insulations 100 at EIR, followed by another Super Late Model main event victory at the track. In a one-off appearance driving the No. 23 car for owner Barry McTavish, Lapainis also won the IMCA Open Wheels of Thunder special for a second time. That year, he also campaigned a Super Late Model entry owned by Steve Lee at Saskatoon.
Lapainis achieved his peak career accolade during the 2005 season, driving a Late Model to the track championship at Edmonton International Raceway under the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series banner, with a stat line of 16 races, 15 top fives and 8 Wins .[1] Mirroring his regional success on a continental stage, Lapainis concluded the year ranked 11th overall in Division II of the final NASCAR Weekly National Standings with 822 Points.
United States Debut, Dirt Racing, and Retirement (2006–2009)
[edit]In 2006, Lapainis moved to the Southeastern United States to test his skills in the heart of American stock car racing. He competed at Orange County Speedway in Rougemont, North Carolina, entering 11 Late Model Stock Car events. Facing deep local fields, he secured a sixth-place finish in the track's final seasonal point standings.
Returning to Western Canada in 2007, Lapainis claimed multiple single-day points victories at both EIR and Race City Speedway. He also won Day 1 points honors during the Wolffpack Run at Race City and secured his second career runner-up finish at the Roy Ross Memorial Race.
Seeking a new challenge, Lapainis transitioned to dirt track racing in 2008. Making his dirt IMCA Modified debut at Rocky Mountain Raceway Park, he drove to a third-place podium finish. In 2009, he ran his first full seasonal campaign on dirt, capturing two additional podium finishes at Rocky Mountain Raceway Park before stepping away from full-time driving.
Post-racing career
[edit]Following his retirement from driving, Lapainis remained involved in local motorsports as a pit crew member and technical consultant for JTD Motorsports, supporting his brother's Hobby Stock program. He also became an active competitor on the iRacing simulation platform, competing in online leagues including the LFRL Late Model Stock Tour.[2]
Outside of racing, Lapainis works professionally within the electrical and industrial manufacturing sectors in Western Canada. He holds 3 Red Seal Certifications currently(Machinist Technician, Electrician and Refrigeration and HVAC ) .[3]
