Jennifer Estlin (née Cohen), also formerly credited professionally as Jennifer Bill, is an American actress and producer from Ohio, based in Chicago. [1][2] She is the co-owner and executive producer of Annoyance Theatre & Bar, an independent comedy and improv venue in Chicago, which she has operated since 2002.[2] Estlin is also the co-creator and operator of ImprovFiend, an online improv education platform.[3]
Early life and education
[edit]Estlin was born in Cleveland, Ohio. She trained at Northwestern University, graduating in 1987.[4] In 1987, she performed in Alice!, a production by André Gregory directed by David Schwimmer, which was presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. She subsequently lived in Paris from 1987 to 1988, where she earned a living busking on the Paris Métro.[5]
Acting career
[edit]Estlin moved to Chicago and joined the Annoyance Theatre as an actress in 1988, performing in the production of Splatter Theater.[2] Her television work includes recurring and guest roles on network dramas. She played Cathy Briscoe, the daughter of Detective Lennie Briscoe (played by Jerry Orbach), in three episodes of Law & Order, including the Season 6 finale "Aftershock," under her former professional name Jennifer Bill.[6][1]She also had a recurring role as Judge Cohen in the series Proven Innocent.[1]
Her film work includes a lead role in Everything Fun You Could Possibly Do in Aledo, Illinois.[7] She also appeared in the short films A Million Miles Away (2014),[8] and Blood Below the Skin[9] (directed by Jennifer Reeder).
In theater, she was a company and touring member of The Second City, performing in the reviews "It Ain't Over Until The Fat Lady's Done Watching the OJ Trial"[10][11] directed by Bernadette Birkett, and "The Second City" at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas.[12] She has also performed with Chicago's Northlight Theatre,[13] Body Politic Theater,[14] and Mary-Arrchie Theater.[15] Estlin performs in the mentalism act Napier & Estlin alongside improv pioneer Mick Napier.[16]
Annoyance Theatre
[edit]Estlin became executive producer and owner of Annoyance Theatre & Bar in 2002.[2] Founded in 1987,[17] the theatre operates approximately 30 shows per week across two performance spaces and functions as a training center for improv and sketch comedy under Estlin's leadership.[18] The training network was later expanded to include ImprovFiend, an online masterclass platform designed to provide virtual instruction and community access to comedy students outside of the Chicago area.[19]Estlin has contributed to Annoyance's creative output as both co-creator and director. She co-created Shark Tank: The Musical (2018).[20] She also directed Scientology: The Unauthorized Musical (2009).[21]
Estlin was recognized in New City magazine's "Players 50 2026: The Producers and Places"[22] feature for her contributions to Chicago's performing arts landscape. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she worked to raise awareness and funds for live entertainment venues to remain in business.[23] [24]Through the Annoyance Theatre, Napier and Estlin also established a corporate workshop series focusing on communication, public presentation, and professional collaboration.[25]
Awards and recognition
[edit]Estlin and partner Napier received an Individual Artist Program grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) in 2024.[26]

Generation gap: Wednesday's season-ending episode of "Law & Order" should be fun for Northwestern theater alums–Jennifer Bill, a recent grad, plays the daughter of Jerry Orbach (detective Lenny Briscoe in the series), another alum.
