Jealous Butcher Records is an American independent record label based in Portland, Oregon. Founded by Rob Jones in 1991, the label has released recordings by artists including The Decemberists, M. Ward, Laura Gibson, Team Dresch and Califone.[1]
History
[edit]Jealous Butcher was founded by musician and graphic designer Rob Jones in 1991. Jones became involved in Oregon's independent music community as a musician, graphic designer, show booker and flyer designer. Vortex Music Magazine described him as having spent more than two decades involved in underground music scenes and described Jealous Butcher as one of Oregon's independent record labels.[1]
The label initially operated on a small scale, with early releases made by dubbing cassettes and photocopying inserts.[2]
By the late 1990s, Jealous Butcher was operating in Portland. A 1998 issue of CMJ New Music Report listed the label at a Southeast Portland address and documented its release of a split single by Kind of Like Spitting and Rose for Sharon.[3]
Jealous Butcher subsequently became associated with a number of musicians in Portland's independent music scene. Vortex Music Magazine cited releases involving The Decemberists, M. Ward, Laura Gibson, Viva Voce and Blind Pilot among the label's work.[1]
In 2010, Willamette Week described Jones as an active participant in the Portland music scene and noted Jealous Butcher releases by M. Ward, Kind of Like Spitting, Hutch and Kathy and The Decemberists.[4]
That year, the label released From the Land of the Ice and Snow, a multi-artist tribute to Led Zeppelin. Willamette Week reported that approximately 50 artists were involved in the project.[4]
Reissues and later activity
[edit]In addition to releasing new recordings, Jealous Butcher has issued archival material and reissues. In 2019, the label reissued the catalogue of Pacific Northwest queercore band Team Dresch, including the albums Personal Best and Captain My Captain, and released Choices, Chances, Changes: Singles & Comptracks 1994–2000.[5]
The label has continued to release new recordings and reissues by artists from the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere.[6]
