Jarrett Bell is an American sports journalist and NFL columnist for USA Today, where he has worked since 1993.[1] He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee and a recipient of the Pro Football Writers of America (PFWA) Bill Nunn Jr. Award.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Bell was raised in Detroit, Michigan.[3] During his youth, he worked at Olympia Stadium as an equipment manager for the Detroit Jr. Wings and as an assistant in the Detroit Red Wings public relations department.
He attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in Human Communication.[4] In 1979, he studied abroad at the University of London under The Guardian's Contemporary Mass Media program.[5]
Career
[edit]Bell began his journalism career as a staff writer for The Dallas Times Herald.[6] In 1989, he became the editor of The Dallas Cowboys Weekly. From 1990 to 1992, he covered the San Francisco 49ers for The Marin Independent Journal.[7]
In 1993, Bell joined USA Today as a national NFL columnist, covering league games, business operations, and executive profiles.[1]
From 2013 to 2017, Bell was a contributor for ESPN, appearing as a panelist on NFL Insiders and SportsCenter.[8] He has also appeared as a commentator on CBS Sports, NBC Sports, CNN, and NFL Network.
Committees and honors
[edit]Bell has served on the Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee since 1997.[9] He was a member of the 26-person Blue Ribbon Panel that selected the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team and serves on the media panel that selects the Super Bowl MVP.
In 2022, the PFWA awarded Bell the Bill Nunn Jr. Award for long and distinguished career contributions to professional football reporting.[10] He received first-place honors from the Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) in 2020 and has received multiple writing awards from the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ).[1]
