Jarno Zaffelli is an Italian motor-racing circuit designer and the founder of Dromo Circuit Design. He has led the redesign and resurfacing of circuits including Silverstone, Zandvoort and the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, and was the original designer of the Madring circuit in Madrid.[1][2]
Career
[edit]Zaffelli founded Dromo Circuit Design, an engineering company specialising in the design, safety analysis and resurfacing of motor-racing circuits. The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile described his development of a crash-prediction model based on eleven years of accident and circuit data. The model was used during Dromo's 2012 reconstruction of the Autódromo Termas de Río Hondo in Argentina.[3]
At the 2017 FIA Sport Conference, he presented the use of data analysis in circuit design and safety work.[4]
Following the cancellation of the 2018 British motorcycle Grand Prix because of drainage and surface problems, Zaffelli was appointed to take part in the technical investigation at Silverstone.[5]
Dromo subsequently worked on the circuit's complete resurfacing in 2019.[6]
Between 2019 and 2020, Zaffelli led design work for the renovation of Zandvoort ahead of the return of the Dutch Grand Prix to Formula One. The project included the banked Hugenholtz and Arie Luyendyk corners.[1][7]
In 2021 and 2022, Zaffelli and Dromo worked on the renovation of Spa-Francorchamps, including changes to the three-dimensional geometry and surface of Eau Rouge–Raidillon while retaining its plan-view alignment.[8]
In January 2024, Zaffelli was presented as the designer of the semi-permanent Formula One circuit planned around the IFEMA exhibition complex in Madrid.[2][9]
Madrid design dispute
[edit]In 2025, IFEMA terminated contract 24/219, which concerned support for the implementation of the project, and appointed companies from the German group founded by circuit designer Hermann Tilke to continue the Madrid project. In 2026, the Cologne Regional Court noted that the separate licence agreement had not been expressly terminated and held, for the purposes of the German interim proceedings, that termination of contract 24/219 did not authorise the Tilke companies to reproduce the protected material in Germany.[10]
The court granted Dromo interim relief limited to Germany, prohibiting two Tilke companies from reproducing specified planning documents. El País reported that a court-appointed expert had found Dromo material stored, and in some cases processed, in Tilke's files. The order was preliminary and did not determine the contractual dispute in Spain.[11][12]
IFEMA maintained that it had terminated Dromo's contract because of documented breaches and that it was entitled to provide the material to third parties; Dromo disputed that account.[13]
