Janie Price, also known by the stage name Bird (stylised in all caps), is an English-Irish singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, composer, and filmmaker.[1] She is noted for a musical style that blends Alternative pop and Indie folk with classical instrumentation, specifically the cello. Price is known for her solo albums, her songwriting collaborations with international artists, and her award-winning short film, Wider Than The Sky.[2] She is a voting member of several professional bodies, including The Ivors Academy, PRS for Music, and the World Soundtrack Awards.[3]
Early life and education
[edit]Janie Price was born in Carshalton, Surrey, and attended Greenshaw High School in Sutton.[4] She began playing the cello at the age of six and later performed with the Sutton Schools Symphony Orchestra (SSSO).[5] In her youth, she performed as a drummer in the London indie music circuit, playing at venues such as the Marquee Club. Price attended the University of the Arts London (UAL), where she graduated with a BA (Hons) in Design.[6]
Career and session work
[edit]Price began her professional career at age 18 as a session musician. As a cellist, drummer, and vocalist, she has performed and recorded with various international artists, including Emeli Sandé, Just Jack, Haddaway, and Perry Blake.[3] Price has performed internationally at music festivals and industry showcases, including SXSW in Austin, Texas, and AmericanaFest in Nashville.[7] Additionally, she has toured globally as a session musician, performing at major venues and festivals as a cellist and vocalist for artists including Emeli Sandé.[8]
As a songwriter and producer, Price co-wrote and produced tracks for the album Columbine by Danish singer Aura Dione.[9] Price has collaborated as a songwriter with various musicians, including James Dean Bradfield of Manic Street Preachers, John Paul White of The Civil Wars, Hal Lindes of Dire Straits, and Andy Dunlop of Travis.[10][11]
Price was a featured vocalist on the album In Wonderland (2016) by the Belgian band Hooverphonic.[12]
Performing as BIRD, Price has released five studio albums, including The Insides, Girl and a Cello, and Figments of Our Imagination, the latter produced by Chris Kimsey.[13] In 2025, she released the EP Heads or Tales, featuring the single "Sunny Days,"[14] which was named Record of the Day and received national airplay on BBC Radio.
Television and literature
[edit]In 2010, Price featured in the six-part Sky Arts series Art of Survival.[15] In 2011, she published the book A Real Journey based on the series.[15] She has also contributed articles to the Musicians' Union regarding film music composition.[2]
Filmmaking and scoring
[edit]In 2024, Price wrote, directed, and scored the short film Wider Than The Sky.[2] The film was selected by 38 international film festivals and won nine awards, including the Global Music Silver Medal Award.[citation needed] Her documentary directorial debut, You Found A Friend in Elvis,[16] was released in late 2025 and named a finalist for Best Short Documentary at The Bay Film Festival.[17]
Musical style and influences
[edit]Price's music is characterized by the use of cello and layered vocals.[18] She is noted for avoiding the use of Artificial intelligence or Auto-Tune in her recording process. In 2025, former The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr expressed public praise for her cover of "How Soon Is Now."[1]
Personal life
[edit]Price divides her time between the United Kingdom, Italy, and the United States.[19] She operates non-profit songwriting camps designed to support the professional development of songwriters.[20]
