James Laughlin is an American basketball executive who has been the general manager of Napoli Basket of the Italian Lega Basket Serie A (LBA) since 2025. He previously spent five years on the staff of the Golden State Warriors, during which the team won two NBA championships, joined the staff of the Nigeria men's national basketball team in 2020, and spent four seasons as chief of staff to the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans.[1][2]
Career
[edit]Golden State Warriors (2015–2020)
[edit]Laughlin joined the Golden State Warriors in 2015 and was promoted to video coordinator in September 2016.[3][4] He later became the team's director of video operations.[5] During his five seasons with the team under head coach Steve Kerr, the Warriors won two NBA championships.[1]
During the 2019 Western Conference finals, Draymond Green publicly credited Laughlin with encouraging him to support the team's bench players, saying the advice had helped his performance in a Game 3 win over the Portland Trail Blazers.[6]
Nigeria national team (2020)
[edit]In 2020, while still the Warriors' director of video operations, Laughlin joined the staff that Warriors associate head coach Mike Brown assembled after becoming head coach of the Nigeria men's national basketball team, alongside Darvin Ham, Jordi Fernández and Luke Loucks.[5]
New Orleans Pelicans (2021–2025)
[edit]Laughlin joined the New Orleans Pelicans in 2021 and spent four seasons as chief of staff to head coach Willie Green.[1][7]
Napoli Basket (2025–present)
[edit]In May 2025, Laughlin left the Pelicans to become general manager of Napoli Basket, shortly after the club was acquired by a group of American investors led by Matt Rizzetta and Dan Doyle. The club had finished 14th in the LBA the previous season and was undergoing a broad restructuring.[1][2][8]
