Jaker Khan Majlish, professionally known as JK Majlish, is a Bangladeshi music director, composer, arranger, and singer. He has worked extensively in television music programmes, films, and recorded music.
Career
[edit]Majlish has worked as a music director on prominent television programmes and commercial audio releases in Bangladesh. During his work on RTV's folk music programme Folk Station, he was involved in producing 180 songs in the first season and 78 songs in the initial batch of the second season.[1]
In January 2020, Majlish composed and arranged the song "Amar Choto Bon", written by Sudip Kumar Dip and performed by Asif Akbar and Atika Rahman Momo.[2] His career developments and contributions to the fourth season of Folk Station and various film music projects have been featured widely across national media outlets.[3]
Television
[edit]Folk Station
[edit]Majlish served as the music director for all songs featured on the RTV folk-music programme Folk Station, where he also performed six folk songs.[4] Following the completion of four seasons of Folk Station, he maintained his role as music director throughout the run, notably directing musical arrangements for singer Akhi Alamgir during the fourth season.[5]
Sound of Bengal
[edit]Majlish undertook planning and research for the Maasranga Television programme Sound of Bengal, an initiative created to showcase and preserve lesser-known folk songs.[6]
Film music
[edit]Majlish has contributed composition and performance work to several Bangladeshi films. He served as the composer, music director, and vocalist for the title song of the film Nolok (2018).[7] He also composed the title song for the film Jao Pakhi Bolo Tare, featuring lyrics by Sudip Kumar Dip and vocals by Belal Khan and Saira Reza.[8]
Awards
[edit]Majlish received the Oikko-Channel i Music Award for Best Music Director (2019) for the song "Baroti Mashe", performed by Sania Sultana Liza and written by Sudip Kumar Dip.[9] He was also honored at the RTV Music Awards in the Best YouTube Video category for his work as music director on the song "Sokhi Go Amar Mon Vala Na".[10]
Copyright dispute
[edit]In September 2022, RTV filed a lawsuit against Majlish alleging copyright infringement and breach of trust regarding approximately 250 songs associated with Folk Station.[11] Following an initial court appearance where his bail plea was rejected,[12] a local court granted him bail in October 2022.[13]
