J. K. Shah Classes (also known as JKSC) is an Indian coaching institute based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. It provides coaching for professional commerce examinations, including Chartered Accountancy (CA), Company Secretary (CS), and Cost and Management Accountant (CMA).[1]
History
[edit]J. K. Shah founded the institute in Mumbai in 1983.[1] In January 2014, The Times of India reported comments by Shah, described as the operator of a chain of CA coaching schools, on the low pass rate in Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) examinations and its effect on the supply of qualified chartered accountants.[2]
In August 2014, the newspaper again quoted Shah, commenting on improved results in the CA final examination compared with the previous sitting.[3]
As of October 2022, the institute operated 75 centres across 39 Indian cities.[1][4] It had produced 1,870 All India Rank holders in CA examinations since 2001, and 214 All India Rank holders in CS examinations since 2016.[1][4] Reported alumni include Kumar Mangalam Birla, chairman of the Aditya Birla Group; Piyush Goyal, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry; and Nilesh Shah of Kotak Mahindra Asset Management Company.[4]
Dispute with Ednovate Education
[edit]In September 2020, the institute's then chief executive officer, Ashish Shah, and seven other JKSC teachers resigned; the group went on to establish a rival coaching company, Ednovate Education Private Limited, in March 2021.[5] According to EducationWorld, Ednovate's founders alleged that JKSC pursued legal action against them and spread claims about Ednovate's imminent closure in an effort to intimidate them.[5] JKSC did not directly address these allegations in the report, instead alleging separately that former employees at its Raipur and Jaipur centres had misappropriated student fees.[5] Former JKSC faculty also described strict internal disciplinary policies, including financial penalties for infractions such as late starts to lectures and dress-code violations.[5]
JKSC, in turn, alleged that former employees at its Raipur and Jaipur centres had failed to deposit cash fees collected from students, and said an internal forensic audit had identified approximately ₹1.6 crore (US$170,000) in unaccounted funds; the institute stated it had filed police complaints in connection with the allegations.[5]
In December 2021, Raipur police arrested Dhaval Purohit, one of Ednovate's co-founders and a former JKSC faculty member, after JKSC's managing director J. K. Shah filed a police complaint in October 2021 alleging that Purohit and a second individual, Abhinandan Bafna, had failed to deposit approximately ₹1 crore (US$100,000) in student fees collected at JKSC's Raipur branch.[6] Bafna had been arrested the previous month; police described Purohit as the alleged mastermind, accusing him of directing Bafna, who collected the funds on the ground.[6] Purohit, a chartered accountant, had previously gained online attention under the nickname "30 ml professor" after a video of him teaching went viral.[7][8]
In March 2022, the Chhattisgarh High Court granted Purohit bail after 110 days in custody. The court noted that he had not been named in the original complaint, observed that the dispute appeared to reflect business rivalry between the parties, and noted that Bafna had offered to repay a portion of the disputed funds.[7][9] Purohit denied wrongdoing and said the allegations against him were part of an effort by JKSC to pressure Ednovate's founders.[9]
Acquisition by Veranda Learning Solutions
[edit]In October 2022, Veranda Learning Solutions, through its subsidiary Veranda XL Learning Solutions, agreed to acquire a majority stake in J. K. Shah Education, the company associated with J. K. Shah Classes. The transaction was valued at approximately ₹337.82 crore (US$35 million) and was structured in phases, with the first phase covering 76% of the outstanding capital.[1][4]
Following the acquisition, J. K. Shah continued as chairman, while Pooja Shah and Vishal Shah continued as chief operating officers.[4]
In 2025 and 2026, Veranda Learning announced plans to consolidate its commerce-education businesses, including J. K. Shah Classes, into a separate entity as part of a proposed demerger of its commerce-education vertical.[10][11]
