Itala Gemelli (born May 17, 2002) is an American professional soccer player who plays as a defender for the Kansas City Current of the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL). She played college soccer for the Dayton Flyers and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Early life

[edit]

Gemelli grew up in Rochester, Michigan.[2] She previously participated in gymnastics[3] before joining club soccer teams Nationals and Vardar in the Elite Clubs National League. Gemelli attended Notre Dame Preparatory School and Marist Academy, where she was a four-year varsity team member. She was a three-time all-district and two-time all-region honoree, and received spots on the all-state third team and first teams.[2] As a junior, she scored 23 goals and 10 assists.[4]

College career

[edit]

Dayton Flyers

[edit]

After committing to the University of Dayton in 2019, Gemelli began playing for the Flyers in the 2021 spring season.[5] She soon became a three-year starter for the team at forward.[6] In her freshman season, she scored 9 goals, leading her team and ranking third in the NCAA among all freshmen. She was subsequently named Dayton's Offensive Player of the Year, the Atlantic 10 Conference's Rookie of the Year and landed a slot on the all-conference first team. Gemelli was also twice named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week.[2][7]

In the 2021 fall season, Gemelli continued to find success. She was the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year and earned yet another all-conference first team award after ranking second in the conference with 12 goals.[8] Starting in 13 of her 17 appearances, she was also Dayton's top goalscorer. As a junior in 2022, Gemelli scored 12 times once again, this time leading the Atlantic 10. 7 of her goals were game-winners, tying her for first in the nation. She ended the year with her third and final All-Atlantic 10 first team honor.[2][7] Over her three-season stint with the Flyers, she recorded a total of 33 goals and 8 assists.[6]

Alabama Crimson Tide

[edit]

Gemelli transferred to the University of Alabama ahead of the 2023 season.[7] In her debut with the Crimson Tide in August 2023, she scored a goal to help Alabama beat DePaul, 2–0.[9] Gemelli would also score again Alabama's NCAA tournament first-round win over Western Carolina before the Crimson Tide were eliminated by North Carolina the following match. She finished the season with 12 starts in 22 games. As a fifth-year student in 2024, Gemelli solidified her position change from forward to defender. Making 18 starts in her 20 appearances, she helped the Crimson Tide post four shutouts on the year. In the SEC tournament, she played the full 90 against Vanderbilt before earning the start in Alabama's second-round loss to South Carolina.[1]

Club career

[edit]

After finishing college, Gemelli joined the Kansas City Current II of the pre-professional Women's Premier Soccer League. Serving as team captain,[10] she guided the Current to the 2026 WPSL championship title. She was named to the league's all-central and all-national teams.[11]

On July 31, 2026, Gemelli was announced to have signed her first professional contract with the Kansas City Current's NWSL first team, penning a short-term roster relief deal.[11] She made her professional debut on September 4, replacing late scratch Elizabeth Ball in the Current starting lineup and playing the full 90 minutes of a 2–1 win over Bay FC.[12][13] The following week, Gemelli extended her contract with Kansas City through the end of 2026.[14]

Personal life

[edit]

Gemelli is the daughter of Leo and Rebecca Gemelli, and has two siblings.[2] She is of Italian descent.[15]
