Ipe-Akoko (historically called Ukue, Ukpe, or Uqwe) is a town in the Akoko South-East Local Government Area of Ondo State, Nigeria.[1]
History
[edit]Oral tradition states that the people of Ipe-Akoko migrated from Ife. During early regional conflicts, the community moved to a rocky hill called Uloke for protection.[2]
After the conflicts ended, residents moved back down to the flat land. The Ibà quarter descended first. This relocation was completed by around 1928, but colonial administrative files and early church records show the town was already established long before.[3][4] The Uloke stone site still exists in the town layout.
Monarchy
[edit]The king of Ipe-Akoko is known as the Olupe of Ipe-Akoko. Local tradition names Oba Ajagbi as the first king. The current ruler is Oba Ajiyinrere Francis Makanjuola Apata JP (Arogunbola II).
The monarchy rotates among several royal families across the town quarters:
- Abamido (Ibà quarter)
- Odepo (Ibà quarter)
- Odovie Ute (Igbede quarter)

[edit]The town contains 11 traditional quarters: Ibà-Ute, Ibà-Peju, Okun, Isinodo, Ilegbe, Igbede, Ugbe, Itoto, Ipaso, Uwi, and Uthakpe.
Language and Culture
[edit]The native name of the town and its people is Ukue. Over time, neighboring communities began referring to the settlement as Ipe.
The indigenous language is Ukue (also referred to as Ipe), which belongs to the Edoid language family.[5] Linguistic studies on the Ipe language demonstrate historical vocabulary contact and borrowing with English, Yoruba, and Edo.[6] Most residents are also fluent in Yoruba. Cultural events in the town include the Chegba festival, which features traditional rites and virginity dances (*Uge*), alongside the Uheni, Ella, and Opara festivals.[7]
