The Institute for High Performance Computing and Networking (ICAR) is a research institute of the National Research Council (Italy) (CNR). The institute is headquartered in Rende, Calabria, and operates additional sites in Naples and Palermo.[1][2]
Established in 2001 and operational since June 2002, ICAR conducts research in computer science, information engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, high-performance computing, quantum computing, cloud computing, cybersecurity, robotics, bioinformatics and Internet technologies.[3]
The institute participates in national and international research programmes and collaborates with universities, public institutions and private companies in technology transfer and innovation activities.[4]
History
[edit]ICAR was established as part of the reorganization of the research network of the National Research Council of Italy and became operational in June 2002.[5]
According to the historical reconstruction published by the Italian Association for Computer Science and Automatic Calculation (AICA), the institute originated from the integration of research activities developed within several CNR structures in Southern Italy in the fields of computer science, scientific computing and computer networks.[6]
Among the structures that contributed to the formation of ICAR were the Institute for Systems and Informatics (ISI) in Cosenza, the Center for Parallel Computing and Supercomputers (CPS) in Naples and the Center for Computer Networks Research (CERE) in Palermo.[7]
The scientific roots of the institute date back to research activities carried out by the CNR in computer science from the 1960s onwards, particularly in scientific computing, parallel systems and computer networking.[8]
In 2022, the institute celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a workshop dedicated to artificial intelligence and quantum computing. The event was covered by several Italian news outlets.[9][10]
