Instinct of Sight (abbreviated as IOS) is a five-member Hong Kong independent band formed in spring 2014. The members include lead vocalist (melodies) female singer Ah Bo (N.O.A / Noa Ah Bo), guitarists Ah Wai (Waiself) and Dekezia (Marco), bassist and screamer Ah Heng (EVIN Law), and drummer Freddy Tsang (FRED). The band bases its creations on Post-Hardcore, combining metalcore with screaming vocals and complex, varied arrangements to demonstrate strong emotional tension. As a Hong Kong independent music, metal band and rock heavy band, since its establishment, the band has been continuously active in performances across Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. It has been invited to participate in major music festivals such as Hong Kong's Clockenflap, wow and flutter,[1] Taiwan's Wake Up Festival,[1] Sound Wave Tide Music Festival,[2] and Taiwan's Mountain and Sea Village Music Festival.[3] The band has also collaborated with classic youth brands such as Dr. Martens and Vans,[4] and has been invited to brand launch events or the China Hong Kong International Tattoo Exhibition[5] and other activities. In 2015, the band was selected as one of the "StreetVoice Big Band Birth" bands.[6] The live performances of the Hong Kong rock band IOS possess strong infectivity and it is a metalcore rock independent band that has attracted significant attention in modern Hong Kong.[7]
Instinct of Sight's works such as Boundary Syndrome, Passing, White Black, Freeze Frame and Distance approach contemporary people's spiritual dilemmas and social realities from different angles. Boundary Syndrome explores the alienation of individuals by data systems in the digital age. The lyrics "Said not afraid of sacrifice, not subject to baptism / Born already heavily surrounded" directly point to the desperate reality that modern people have been coded into data cages since birth. This keen capture of social issues makes their music a spiritual embodiment that both exposes wounds and attempts to find possibilities of healing.
The music creation process of Instinct of Sight embodies a high degree of autonomy. From composition, lyrics, arrangement, production to visual post-production, all are personally participated in by the band members. This all-round participation makes their music more personal in spirit and authentic in artistic expression. For example, the 2018 work Armour tells about friendship and records the realization of overcoming obstacles (triggered by the guitarist's accidental injury event).[8] Freeze Frame reflects on the meaning of life and analyzes the spiritual internal bleeding of modern wage slaves. Light and Shadow was co-created with Kit Lo, the lead singer of the local band Reverse Flow, to depict the past, present and future in the lyrics. IOS's music is not only the art of sound, but also a response to Hong Kong's social reality. They use music to dissect the alienation phenomenon in the digital age and materialize the sound waves of identity anxiety and resistance.
Creative Division of Labor
[edit]Instinct of Sight's music creation is characterized by a high degree of collective participation. Guitarist Waiself has long been responsible for instrumental composition (music framework) and the main arrangement skeleton, while lead singer N.O.A creates all vocal melodies (main melody lines) and lyrics. EVIN participates in arrangement, all screaming parts and their lyrics. After the Blended Abstract album, guitarists Dekezia and drummer Freddy also participated in the arrangement and creation of works.
Fans Culture
[edit]The band's fans are called "Squid" (I-Squid), and female fans are called "Squid Silk". This name originates from the lyrics "The soul is like an obstacle" (homophonic "squid") in the song Freeze Frame, and was selected by a high number of votes in a full fan referendum. Instinct of Sight later launched an exclusive "I-Squid" merchandise series, inviting Japanese CG artists to paint "giant squid rampaging in Hong Kong city", with the slogan "Squid Outbreak Notice". Both the autumn/winter long-sleeved and spring/summer short-sleeved versions sold out, and the peripherals are currently out of print.[9]

Band Introduction
[edit]2014–2015
[edit]The initial lineup in 2014 consisted of Hong Kong rock melodic female vocalist N.O.A (Noa Ah Bo), screamer and bassist EVIN Law, and guitarist Kwok Chung Wing. After guitarist Sze Wai Chan (Waiself) joined, the band's music style shifted from power pop to post-hardcore. Waiself was responsible for instrumental composition (music framework, riffs and arrangement skeleton), while lead singer N.O.A handled vocal melody creation, lyrics and recording. Later, Kin T.Poon joined as drummer and producer. The five-member band officially formed to create music belonging to Instinct of Sight.[10] In the early days, the band was active in various competitions, including Po Wo Youth Band Competition, All-Hong Kong Youth Band Competition,[11] Tiger Beer Band Competition and Midsummer Music Festival selection competitions.[12] They advanced to the finals, winning championships and runner-ups, and received awards such as Best Stage Style, Best Drummer and Best Guitarist. After the competitions, the band frequently participated in Live House performances at various venues. The band was invited by various universities to perform annual public shows on campus.
In 2015, nine Hong Kong local bands jointly created Re-Member Live 2015 and produced the theme song Remember This.[13] All three Remember Live concerts were sold out.[14][15][16] In the same year, Instinct of Sight N.O.A collaborated for the first time with Reverse Flow Kit Lo to create the song Light and Shadow, which received widespread acclaim with over 400,000 views on YouTube.[17]
In 2015, the band was also selected as a "StreetVoice Street Sound Big Band Birth Band"[18] and was highly praised as the strongest new star in Hong Kong's heavy circle.[19]
2016
[edit]In 2016, Instinct of Sight gradually gained popularity in Taiwan and South China, frequently traveling between various Live Houses and campus AP performances.[20] It attracted the attention of the young brand Vans[4] and was invited to participate in the Hong Kong International Tattoo Exhibition.[21] It participated in many large music festivals, including its first entry into Taiwan for the Mountain and Sea Village Music Festival.[3]
2017–2018
[edit]From 2014 to 2017, after accumulating more than 60 stage experiences, Instinct of Sight performed on the main Hong Kong stage of wow and flutter for the second time as the headlining band.[22] In 2017, it received attention from local media, including the 9+1 album interview with female lead singer Ah Bo[23] and was selected into the Hong Kong Music Critics Annual Melody shortlist.[24]
In 2018, the band released Armour[8] and announced a 10-song album. Songs are available on Spotify, JOOX,[25] iTunes and MOOV.
2019
[edit]In March 2019, the band held the BLENDED ABSTRACT CD Release Party with over a thousand attendees.[26] In October 2019, guitarist Ah Chung left the band.
2022–2025
[edit]The band continued to be active across Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and mainland China, accumulating over 200 performances. In 2023, "White Black" won the TONE Music Awards. It served as opener for Blood Meat Juice Machine and performed at major festivals including POPFEST in 2025.
