Ian John Drummond (born 19 April 1972) is an English horticulturalist, broadcaster and author. Over a 40-year career in plants, Ian has created gold medal-winning gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show and living sculptures for clients including Elton John, BAFTA and the British Library. An advocate for the health benefits of houseplants..[1], he has written one book At Home with Plants, in partnership with interiors writer Kara O’Reilly[2]. Ian is the founder of the Peggy Drummond Foundation, continuing the charitable work of his late mother[3].
Early life and education
[edit]Ian was born in Camden and grew up living in a council flat in central London, with his parents Peggy and Reginald John Drummond and sister Lisa. At age four, Ian's parents gave him his first houseplant which led him towards a career in botany.[4]
Career
[edit]Aged 20, Ian joined Indoor Garden Design as a plant technician and over the next 29 years became creative director and later co-owner, leading projects for clients including IKEA[5], Harrods, and the Elton John Aids Foundation.
He is a Royal Horticultural Society committee member (Houseplant Advisor)[6] and has won gold medals for show gardens at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, including ‘Best in Show’[7]
Ian has created living exhibitions for London Pride[8], at the Barbican Gallery and London St Pancras Station and houseplant experiences including a London black cab, a Thames Clipper boat, and a London Fashion Week catwalk. Ian has written one book, At Home with Plants, in partnership with interiors writer Kara O’Reilly (published by Octopus, first printed in 2017 and reprinted in 2022, available in eight languages).[9]
Since the sale of Indoor Garden Design in 2021, Ian has founded Ian Drummond Botanical Design[10] and collaborates with architects and designers as a biophilic design consultant.[11]
He is a regular contributor to lifestyle and trade publications, writing about horticulture and houseplants[12]. He has also appeared as an expert on BBC Gardeners’ World, BBC Radio 4 Gardeners’ Question Time and James May's Man Lab.
Charity and philanthropic work
[edit]Ian is an advocate for social inclusion and community cohesion, as the founder of the Peggy Drummond Foundation, to continue the charitable work of his late mother and provide funds for community projects across London.
For many years Ian has been an active participant in the work of the Elton John Aids Foundation.
Awards
[edit]Ian has won gold medals at RHS Chelsea Flower Show[13], a 2025 Floristry Award for Horticulture[14][15], a Plants At Work Award (2021)[16] and Facilities Design Award (2016)[17]
Personal life
[edit]Ian lives between London and Suffolk with his husband Allan Stenhouse and their two dogs. His research in plants has led to him traveling to locations including Costa Rica, Sri Lanka and Thailand.
