Human Blue is a Swedish electronic music project within the psychedelic and progressive trance genres, created and driven by musician and producer Dag Wallin (born in Alingsås). Founded in Vänersborg in the early 1990s, the project became one of the most influential pioneers of what globally became known as Scandinavian Progressive Trance—a more stripped-down, hypnotic, and mechanical sound that emerged as a counter-reaction to the highly melodic Goa trance of the 1990s.
History and the Storgatan 4 Studio
[edit]Dag Wallin began producing music in Vänersborg in the early 1990s but soon relocated his operations to Gothenburg. There, a studio and creative hub were established at Storgatan 4, sharing premises with the legendary record label Spiral Trax, run by Anders Enkvist (DJ Anti). Within this studio collective, Wallin worked side-by-side with other Swedish genre pioneers such as Atmos (Tomas Balicki), Noma, and later S-Range (Anton Sillfors). The collective served as a close-knit creative sounding board where the artists occasionally exchanged ideas and feedback. Concurrently, DJ Anti utilized his extensive international network to arrange bookings and performances worldwide for the studio's artists.
During the golden era, the production process was almost entirely hardware-based. Computer software such as Cubase and Logic was utilized primarily as MIDI sequencers to trigger external synthesizers and hardware samplers. The music was mixed on analog mixing consoles from Soundcraft and Mackie, which provided the tracks with Human Blue's characteristic heavy, dynamic, and analog sound.
Releases and Career
[edit]Human Blue's debut vinyl, the 12" single Stonehenge / Psychotix, was released in May 1997 on Spiral Trax (catalog number SPIT 003).[1] It was followed the same year by the second 12", Funkix / Tellus Salvation (SPIT 005), where the B-side "Tellus Salvation" went on to establish itself as a global classic within the scene.[2]
In April 1999, the critically acclaimed debut studio album Ice was released on Spiral Trax, cementing Human Blue's position on the international stage.[3] The second full-length album, Electric Roundabout, followed in 2001 (catalog number SPITCD010).[4] The tracks "Intercity" and "Carpe Diem" were extracted from this album and released as a separate 12" single (SPIT 021).[5] Upon its release, the single received awards and significant attention in music articles and specialized magazines. The tracks also reached Swedish public broadcasting airwaves and were played on Sveriges Radio's nationwide program P3 Dance. "Carpe Diem" became one of the project's biggest hits.
Following further single releases on Spiral Trax (including SPIT 034)[6] and its sub-label Microgram Recordings (Spiritualizer / Chronic Sphere, 2002),[7] the project's third album, Electrolüx (SPITCD019), was released around the turn of 2004/2005.[8]
In 2005, Wallin broadened his musical palette by releasing his fourth studio album, the ambient/chillout record Diskovery Channel, on the German label Chillcode Recordings.[9]
Subsequently, Human Blue continued its musical trajectory with the British label Transient Records, releasing two additional studio albums within the progressive trance genre: Miss Tarryas Experience (2006)[10] and Base Basket Buffet (2008).[11] In total, the project has released six studio albums. Beyond his solo discography, Human Blue's music has been licensed to hundreds of various artists (VA) compilation albums globally and has reached a wide audience on digital streaming platforms such as Spotify and SoundCloud.
Later Years and 30th Anniversary
[edit]In 2020, Human Blue returned with the previously unreleased track "Accessoare", published by the Danish label Iboga Records.[12] The collaboration with Iboga Records continues into late 2026 / early 2027 with the upcoming single "Optic Pleasures"'.
Spring 2027 marks the 30th anniversary of the project's first official release. To commemorate the milestone, an extensive retrospective compilation is planned, featuring previously unreleased Human Blue material sourced from the archives, spanning over three decades.
