Declined by Jlwoodwa 17 months ago.Please delete the portions which were LLM-generated, and summarize in your own words a range of independent, reliable, published sources that discuss the subject. If you have used an LLM but you believe that your use is covered by one of the two exceptions (basic copyediting and translation between two languages in which you are fully fluent), please provide a transcript of the prompt(s) you used while writing your draft (see the how-to guide). Reviewers can make mistakes. If you have not received any LLM assistance, you may seek a second opinion at the AfC Help Desk. See the advice page on large language models for more information. |
Comment: This, since the beginning has been promotional, and at times, filled with LLM slop. I am rejecting after FIVE (including this one) declines. Feel free to fix the article. 🚂ThatTrainGuy1945 Peep peep! 01:40, 16 April 2026 (UTC)
Comment: Subject is likely notable, but the draft has sourcing issues such as lack of citations with some statements, and some cases of failed verification. Please fix them and then resubmit. NeoGaze (talk) 00:20, 19 January 2026 (UTC)
Comment: I believe the topic is notable. Remaining work to address is to please remove the reliance on self-published and primary sources. For example, the top 5% thesis is a reference directly to Hugo's CV. It can just be removed. Please also remove or reduce the reliance on sources published directly by utoronto and rewrite the article throughout to focus only on content which is mentioned in independent, reliable sources. Hugo Larochelle is a Canadian computer scientist specializing in machine learning and deep learning, and the current scientific director of Mila – Québec AI Institute.[1][2] He has held positions in both industry and academia, having served as a Principal Scientist at Google DeepMind in Montreal, and currently serving as an Adjunct Professor at the Université de Montréal, and a Canada CIFAR AI Chair.[1]
He co-founded Whetlab, a startup which was acquired by Twitter in 2015.
Education
[edit]Hugo Larochelle pursued his entire university education at the Université de Montréal. He earned a BSc degree in Mathematics and Computer Science in 2004 and a PhD in Computer Science in 2009.[3]
His doctoral research was conducted under the supervision of Turing Award laureate Yoshua Bengio.[4] His thesis was titled "Études de techniques d'apprentissage non-supervisé pour l'amélioration de l'entraînement supervisé de modèles connexionnistes" (Studies of unsupervised learning techniques for improving supervised training of connectionist models).[4]
From 2009 to 2011, Larochelle completed postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto under the supervision of Geoffrey Hinton.[5]
Career
[edit]In 2011, Larochelle was hired as Assistant Professor at the Département d'informatique (Department of Computer Science) at the Université de Sherbrooke in Québec.[6] He is an Adjunct Professor at Université de Montréal since 2017. He is a Core Industry Member at Mila – Québec AI Institute, and holds a Canada CIFAR AI Chair.[7][8]
Whetlab and Twitter
[edit]While at Université de Sherbrooke, Larochelle co-founded Whetlab around 2014. The startup originated from research conducted with collaborators Jasper Snoek, Kevin Swersky, Ryan P. Adams, and Alex Wiltschko.[9] Whetlab was acquired by Twitter in June 2015.[9] Following the acquisition Larochelle joined Twitter.[10]
Google Brain and Google DeepMind
[edit]In 2016, Larochelle moved to Google to establish and lead the new Google Brain research group in Montreal.[11] In April 2023, Google Brain merged with DeepMind, a sister company also owned by Google's parent Alphabet Inc., to form Google DeepMind.
Academic contributions
[edit]Larochelle is a co-founder and served as a founding Editor-in-Chief (alongside Raia Hadsell and Kyunghyun Cho) of Transactions on Machine Learning Research (TMLR), a journal launched in 2022 under the umbrella of the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR).[12]
He serves on the boards of the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) and the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS).[13][14]
Larochelle created a comprehensive online course covering neural networks and deep learning, based on lectures he delivered at Université de Sherbrooke.[15]
Philanthropy
[edit]Hugo Larochelle and his wife Angèle St-Pierre have made philanthropic contributions to education and research. In 2019, the Fonds Angèle St-Pierre et Hugo Larochelle announced the bequest of a life insurance policy valued at over $800,000 to the Université de Sherbrooke to support the department of computer science.[6] In 2022, Larochelle and St-Pierre announced a $1 million donation to Université de Montréal.[16] This donation funds PhD scholarships for students conducting research on the application of artificial intelligence to environmental problems, such as combating climate change or biodiversity decline. They made a further donation of $1.25 million to Université de Montréal in 2024.[17]

Articles about people must meet Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion for people. The draft requires multiple published secondary sources that:
- provide significant coverage: discuss the person in detail, not just brief mentions or routine announcements;
- are reliable: from reputable outlets with editorial oversight;
- are independent: not connected to the person, such as interviews, press releases, the subject's own website, or sponsored content.
Please add references that meet all three of these criteria. If none exist, the subject is not yet suitable for Wikipedia.
