Hugo Maria Adriana Leonardus (Hugo) Jansen (born 25 October 1951 in Ossendrecht)[1] is a Dutch farmer and political activist known primarily for his antisemitic and pro-Russian political activism.
Activism and views
[edit]In 2011, Janssen gained regional attention after setting up an Occupy tent by himself in the centre of Breda. During the protest, he argued that the financial crisis had been caused by a neoconservative "Jewish elite".[2] Earlier, he had become locally known for campaigning against the construction of a business park in Ossendrecht. From 2017 onwards, he attracted national and international attention with pro-Russian billboards along the A4 motorway displaying anti-American and pro-Putin slogans.[2] One billboard in particular, claiming that Russia had been responsible for the liberation of Europe and citing the Russian government's disputed figure of 26 million Russian war dead, received international attention.[3][2]
In 2018, journalists from NRC reported that Jansen had financed the distribution of 50,000 pro-Russian newspapers. They also found that he had organised and financed two events at De Balie, where conspiracy theorists Joost Niemöller and Karel van Wolferen were invited as speakers and criticised Western media whilst defending Russia's geopolitical role.[2]
On the internet, Jansen repeatedly expressed antisemitic views on his own websites and opinion pages, often using the pseudonyms Jan Verheul and Johan Vermeulen, writing about an alleged Jewish elite in Israel and the United States. According to Jansen, this elite was responsible for the September 11 attacks and for several wars involving the United States.[2] Within this worldview, Jansen regards Russia under Vladimir Putin as the nation capable of preventing Israel and its alleged Jewish allies in the United States from establishing world domination.[2]
Jansen considers the Russian invasion of Ukraine to be justified. He has argued that the Russian attempt to capture Kyiv in 2022, which was repelled by the Ukrainian military, had in fact been a successful diversionary operation in support of the Russian offensive in the Donbas.[4] He has also claimed that Ukraine, rather than Russia, was responsible for the Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 shootdown and the Bucha massacre.[4][2] Journalists at De Volkskrant found that Jansen regularly cited publications produced by purveyors of disinformation.[3]
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Jansen promoted hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin as treatments for COVID-19.[5]
