Hrishikesh Dattatreya Pai (born 9 February 1960) is an Indian obstetrician, gynaecologist, and infertility specialist.[1] He served as the 61st President of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) from 2022 to 2023. In 2023, he was elected Regional Trustee for Asia-Oceania of the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO).[2] He is known for his work in assisted reproductive technology (ART), in vitro fertilisation (IVF), infertility, fertility preservation, and reproductive medicine.[3][4]

Early life and education

Pai was born on 9 February 1960 in Maharashtra, India.[5] He completed an MD in obstetrics and gynaecology from Seth G. S. Medical College and KEM Hospital, University of Mumbai, in 1985.[6] He completed a clinical fellowship in reproductive biology and embryology at the Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne, in 1989–1990.[6] He later obtained a Master of Science degree in Clinical Embryology and Andrology from Eastern Virginia Medical School in the United States.[6]

Pai is a consultant obstetrician, gynaecologist, and infertility specialist based in Mumbai. He practices at Lilavati Hospital and is the founder and medical director of Bloom IVF Group.[7][8]

Professional leadership

Pai served as the 61st President of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) from 2022 to 2023.[9] In 2023, he was elected Regional Trustee for the Asia–Oceania region of the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO).[2]

Research and contributions

Pai's work has focused on assisted reproductive technology (ART), in vitro fertilisation (IVF), infertility, fertility preservation, and reproductive medicine.[10][11][12] His work has been covered in relation to infertility treatment, surrogacy, reproductive healthcare, [13] and the use of oocyte cryopreservation (egg freezing) for delayed parenthood and fertility preservation.[14][15][16][17][18] His clinical work has been covered in connection with donor-egg assisted pregnancies involving women of advanced maternal age.[19] Pai has spoken on infertility trends in India, including the increasing prevalence of male-factor infertility, delayed marriages, and the growing use of assisted reproductive technology.[20] He has discussed regulatory issues relating to assisted reproductive technology in India, including provisions of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021.[21] His views on regulatory developments affecting assisted reproductive technology, including policies governing the import of frozen human embryos, have been cited in independent media.[22]

Manyata programme

Pai served as Chief Administrator of FOGSI's Manyata programme, a quality improvement initiative for private maternity facilities in India.[23] In 2022, the programme was expanded through a collaboration between FOGSI and the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH).[24]

Honours

In 2019, Pai was awarded Honorary Fellowship (ad eundem) of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG).[25]
