Holy Cross Parish is a Roman Catholic and Jesuit parish in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. Located in Gordon Head near the University of Victoria and Camosun College, it is a parish of the Diocese of Victoria. Pastoral responsibility for the parish was entrusted to the Jesuits of Canada on 31 July 2026, with Fr. Erik Oland, SJ, as pastor.[1]

History

[edit]

The parish was established in 1980 under the leadership of Fr. Joseph Jackson, CSSp, a member of the Spiritans. The present church was built to serve the growing Gordon Head area and was blessed on 27 February 1983. Its history therefore predates its relationship with the Jesuits.[2] The parish's location also led it to serve students and staff at nearby post-secondary institutions.[1]

On 31 July 2026, the Jesuits assumed pastoral responsibility for Holy Cross, beginning a new chapter in the parish's ministry while continuing its diocesan and local legacy.[1]

Jesuit identity

[edit]

Holy Cross's Jesuit identity is expressed through Ignatian prayer and discernment, thoughtful preaching, strong liturgy, justice, social outreach, and service.[3] In its local context, this includes ministry among families, university and college communities, and the wider Gordon Head neighbourhood.

Holy Cross is one of ten Jesuit parish and chapel communities in Canada. The others are St. Mark's Parish in Vancouver, St. Ignatius Parish in Winnipeg, Immaculate Conception Church in M'Chigeeng, Holy Cross Church in Wiikwemkoong, St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Little Current, Holy Rosary Parish in Guelph, Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Toronto, Divine Mercy Parish in St. John's, and Chapelle des Jésuites in Quebec City.
