Hesham A. Saleh is a British consultant rhinologist and facial plastic surgeon. He is a consultant at Charing Cross Hospital and Royal Brompton Hospital, and Professor of Practice (Rhinology) at Imperial College London.
Career
[edit]Saleh specialises in rhinology, with a clinical focus on nasal and sinus disorders, including complex tertiary referral cases.
He has been involved in the development of multidisciplinary approaches to anterior skull base surgery in the United Kingdom, working with neurosurgical teams to establish joint surgical practice within the National Health Service.[1]
He has contributed to the teaching of anterior skull base surgery in the United Kingdom and chaired a conference organised by the British Society of Skull Base Surgery in 2008.[2]
Since 2001, he has worked in collaboration with ophthalmologists and orbital surgeons and has been associated with the use of endoscopic techniques in orbital and lacrimal surgery.[1]
Saleh has also been involved in postgraduate surgical education, including directing rhinoplasty and functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) courses in London.
He has been the subject of professional interviews discussing his career and contributions to facial plastic surgery, including a feature in The PMFA Journal and a recorded interview available online.[1][3]
Education and training
[edit]Saleh was born in Cairo, Egypt, and educated in Egypt and Iraq. He obtained his medical degree (MBBCh) from Ain Shams University in 1983.
He later moved to the United Kingdom, where he completed higher surgical training in otolaryngology across multiple regional training programmes. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) in 1995 and the Intercollegiate FRCS in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery in 1999.
His postgraduate training included fellowships in the Netherlands and the United States.
Academic work
[edit]Saleh has published over 140 peer-reviewed articles and more than 40 book chapters in rhinology and facial plastic surgery.
His work has addressed topics including septorhinoplasty, endoscopic sinus surgery, skull base surgery, and cerebrospinal fluid leak management.
At Imperial College London, he has held roles in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, including course leadership and research supervision.
Professional roles

- President of the British Society of Facial Plastic Surgery
- President of the Laryngology and Rhinology Section of the Royal Society of Medicine
He has also served on the council of the British Rhinological Society and on the board of the International Federation of Facial Plastic Surgery Societies.
From 2018 to 2024, he was ENT lead on the Intercollegiate Cosmetic Surgery Oversight Committee, established by the Royal College of Surgeons and supported by the UK Department of Health.[4]
The committee contributed to the development of training standards and the UK Cosmetic Surgery Certification scheme, introduced in 2021.[4]
Recognition
[edit]Saleh has been included in published listings of medical specialists in the UK media. The Times included him in its guides to leading doctors (2010) and surgeons (2011), based on peer and professional recommendations.[5][6]
He has also been listed in Tatler's Cosmetic Surgery Guide, which profiles selected UK practitioners in aesthetic surgery.[7]
Honours
[edit]Saleh has received awards from professional societies in rhinology and facial plastic surgery, including the Claus D. Walter Award for Academic Excellence from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 2017, the W. J. Harrison Award from the Royal Society of Medicine in 2018, and the Joseph Medal from the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery in 2024.
He has also received honorary memberships from several international professional societies.
