Hendrix Genetics is a Dutch animal breeding company specializing in genetics for laying hens, turkeys, poultry, swine, and aquaculture species. Founded in 2005 and headquartered in Boxmeer, Netherlands, the company operates in more than 25 countries and employs over 2,800 people worldwide.[2][3]
History
[edit]Hendrix Genetics was formed in 2005 through the merger of ISA (Institut de Sélection Animale) and Hendrix Poultry Breeders. [4] ISA breeding programs are associated with commercial layer lines such as ISA Brown, one of the most widely used laying hen hybrids worldwide. Some of its breeding lines originate from earlier poultry genetics companies such as Shaver Poultry Breeding Farms. [5]
Since its foundation, Hendrix Genetics has expanded into a multi-species breeding company through acquisitions and organic growth, adding activities in swine genetics and aquaculture.[6] [7]
Research and partnerships
[edit]Hendrix Genetics participates in research and development initiatives related to animal genetics, sustainability, and food production.
Research programs focus on improving livability and production performance in livestock through genetic selection.[8]
The company is involved in the SAPPSA (Sustainable Access to Poultry Parent Stock in Africa) program, which aims to improve access to poultry genetics for smallholder farmers. [9] Since its launch in 2018, the initiative, co-funded with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, has supported access to improved poultry genetics for millions of farmers in Africa.[10] The initiative has been awarded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.[11]
Hendrix Genetics has also collaborated on projects related to alternative protein sources, including insect breeding for animal feed in partnership with biotechnology companies.[12] [13]
The company is a member of research initiatives such as Breed4Food, a consortium established by Wageningen University & Research and three animal breeding companies focusing on innovation in animal genetics.[14] [15] [16]
Ownership
[edit]Hendrix Genetics is privately held. Paine Schwartz, a private equity firm, holds a 50% stake in the company, while co-founders Thijs Hendrix and Antoon van den Berg hold the remaining 50%.[17]
