History

[edit]

Formation (2014–2015)

[edit]

Helion Prime was formed in 2014, when Dire Peril guitarist Jason Ashcraft teamed up with Graveshadow vocalist Heather Michele. The band took its name from an alien planet in the 2004 film The Chronicles of Riddick. With their shared love for heavy metal and science, they wanted to create a power metal based on actual scientific theories and sci-fi tributes.[2][3]

The duo recorded their first demo in June 2014, and, with help from members of Dire Peril and Axiom, played their first live show in August 2014 at the Boardwalk in Orangevale, California. Their debut EP, The Drake Equation, came out in 2015. The lineup was filled out by Jeremy Steinhouse on bass and Axiom's Justin Herzer on drums. In August 2015 the band went on its first tour, with shows in Oregon, Nevada, California, and Utah.[3][4]

Debut album and lineup changes (2016–2018)

[edit]

The self-titled debut album was released independently on February 15, 2016.[5] After the independent pressing sold out, they partnered with Divebomb Records to reissue it.[4]

Lead guitarist Chad Anderson joined in early 2016. That same year Michele left to focus full-time on Graveshadow and was replaced by classically trained singer Kayla Dixon (Witch Mountain) from Washington, D.C., who recorded the 2017 release Remnants of Stars. Drummer Herzer departed and was replaced by Alex Bosson (ex-Decomposition). Dixon left after a tour in early 2018 to form her own project, Dressing the Dead.[1]

Terror of the Cybernetic Space Monster (2018)

[edit]

After auditioning many singers, the band chose Cyprus-born vocalist and scientist Sozos Michael, who debuted on the 2018 album Terror of the Cybernetic Space Monster.[1] The album was released through AFM Records on August 31, 2018.[6] Ashcraft later reflected that there was no grace period with Michael, and the band had to dive straight in and release an album with AFM without knowing how things would work out.[7]

Question Everything (2020)

[edit]

Michael departed amicably and was succeeded by Mary Zimmer, whose previous bands include Luna Mortis, The Ottoman Empire, Earthen and White Empress, and who toured the U.S. twice with the band before recording.[8][9] The band funded the album through a Kickstarter campaign.[10]

Question Everything was released on October 5, 2020 through the band's label Saibot Reigns. Original singer Heather Michele returned in a writing role, contributing all lyrics and melodies.[11] The title track features guest verses from both Sozos Michael and Heather Michele, and the album closes with a cover of the Misfits' "Kong at the Gates".[9][12]

Recent activity (2021–present)

[edit]

In June 2026, Ashcraft and Alon Mei-Tal joined the progressive metal band The Mourning.[13] On September 18, 2026, they released a re-recording of the song Live and Die On This Day from their debut album, rejoined by their original vocalist Heather Michele.[14]

Style and lyrical themes

[edit]

Musical style

[edit]

Their sound has been described as dramatic and anthemic, drawing on classic progressive metal.[15] The band's riffs have been compared them to Unleash the Archers, with elements of Melodic death metal and a touch of Metalcore.[12]

Lyrical themes

[edit]

From the start, the band's concept was power metal built on real scientific theories and people, with occasional sci-fi tributes.[2] Almost every song is about a specific idea, such as an equation, a historical event, a hypothetical technology, or a film or game, rather than from general fantasy imagery.

The debut album Helion Prime is about humanity reaching into space and asking whether we are alone. The opening songs are about the existence of alien life ("Into the Alien Terrain", "The Drake Equation" (see Drake equation, estimating the likelihood of intelligent life in the universe)). "Life finds a way" nods at Jurassic Park. Further songs deal with black holes ("Into the Black Hole") and the space-time continuum ("Ocean of Time"). "Apollo (The Eagle Has Landed)" celebrates the moon landing. "Moon-Watcher" takes its name from the ape-man in 2001: A Space Odyssey whose encounter with the monolith starts human evolution.

The second album Terror of the Cybernetic Space Monster focuses more on human nature and raises moral questions. For example, "Bury the Sun" deals with survival and the cost of controlling nature. It is set in a far future, where humanity encloses its sun in a Dyson sphere to survive and eventually watches the star turn red and die. "Urth" is inspired by the 1990s fighting game Primal Rage and is about religion, tribalism, and people serving destructive powers.

Question Everything is a full concept album in which each song focuses on a historical figure who significantly advanced human thinking, namely Ignaz Semmelweis ("Wash Away"), Albert Einstein ("The Final Theory"), Katherine Johnson ("Madame Mercury"), Alan Turing ("Prof"), Socrates ("The Gadfly"), Galileo ("E Pur Si Muove"), Rosalind Franklin ("Photo 51"), and Gregor Mendel ("Words of the Abbot"). The song "The Forbidden Zone" breaks the pattern, with its subject (Dr. Cornelius from Planet of the Apes) being fictional.
