Harper James is a British commercial law firm founded in 2014 by solicitor Toby Harper. The firm operates a predominantly remote-working model and focuses on providing commercial legal services to small and medium-sized businesses. Its pricing includes subscription-based plans as well as project-based work.[1][2]
History and business model
[edit]Toby Harper launched Expert Business Advisors, trading as Harper James, in 2014 after working in commercial law and spending time on secondment to a venture capital business in Birmingham.[1]
Legal Futures reported in 2020 that the firm's 37 lawyers worked flexibly and that 65 per cent of its clients were using pricing plans. The publication also reported that the firm planned to increase its investment in technology as it grew.[1]
In March 2024, LPM reported that just under 90 per cent of the firm's clients were generated through centralised sales, marketing and client-services functions rather than through individual lawyers bringing an established client following.[2]
Private equity investment
[edit]In March 2025, The Sunday Times reported that Harper James was among a number of UK law firms considering private-equity investment amid increased investor interest in the legal-services sector.[3]
In June 2025, private-equity investor LDC, part of Lloyds Banking Group, took a minority stake in Harper James.[4]
City A.M. subsequently examined the investment as part of a wider analysis of private-equity interest in UK law firms. It reported that Harper James had been approached by private-equity investors for several years before beginning a formal process to select an investment partner.[5]
