Harada Naomasa (原田 直政; died May 30, 1576),[1] also known as Ban Naomasa (塙 直政)[2] or Kurozaemon (九郎左衛門),[2] was a samurai of the Sengoku period and a retainer of the Oda clan.[1] He held the title of Bitchū no Kami (備中守, "Governor of Bitchū Province").[2] Originally using the surname Ban (塙), he was granted the surname Harada in 1575, adopting the name of a respected clan.[2]

Career

[edit]

Naomasa began his service as a member of Oda Nobunaga's elite royal bodyguards.[1] After Nobunaga entered Kyoto in 1568 to become its de facto ruler, Naomasa managed administrative documents and organized official ceremonies.[1]

In June 1574, he was placed at the head of Yamashiro Province,[1] and eight months later in 1575, he gained control of Yamato Province.[1]

Military Operations and Death

[edit]

In 1574, Naomasa began participating in military actions.[2] In 1575, he joined the Sieges of Nagashima[2] and led troops in suppressing the Ikkō-ikki rebellion in Echizen Province.[1]

In May 1576, Naomasa took part in the campaign against the Ishiyama Hongan-ji in Osaka alongside Akechi Mitsuhide, Araki Murashige, and Hosokawa Fujitaka.[1][2] Serving in the main army, he participated in the siege of Mitsu-ji, where his forces were surprised by Hongan-ji troops.[1][2] He was killed in the resulting battle on May 30, 1576.[1][2]
