Hao Wei Tu (Chinese: 杜浩瑋; born 17 June 1998), also known as Howard Tu, is a Taiwanese communication designer and design researcher based between Melbourne, Australia, and Taipei, Taiwan. His work spans visual identity, typography, branding, and design research. In 2022, he received The One Club for Creativity's Young Ones Portfolio Award, becoming the first recipient from Taiwan and East Asia to receive the award.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and education

[edit]

Tu was born in Taichung, Taiwan.[5] He studied design at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, also known as Taiwan Tech.[6][7]

In 2023, he received a PhD scholarship to study at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia.[6][7] His doctoral research is situated in design and technology, with links to Design Factory Melbourne and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).[8]

Tu has also received recognition from the Red Dot Design Award. His project D&AD Exhibition in Taiwan received a Red Dot: Best of the Best in Brands & Communication Design in 2022.[13] Other works associated with him have been recognised by Red Dot in communication design, packaging, poster design, and design concept categories.[14][15][16][17][18]

Tu has been involved in the visual identity design for the D&AD Exhibition in Taiwan, a project connected with Taiwan Tech's hosting of the D&AD Awards Annual Exhibition.[19][20] The project was shortlisted by D&AD in 2022.[21] It was also recognised by the ADC Annual Awards and other design organisations.[22][23][24]

In Australia, Tu has worked as a Senior Graphic Designer at D&D Creative in Melbourne.[5] In 2025, he was named a finalist for Emerging Designer of the Year at the Australian Graphic Design Association Awards.[10] He also served as a juror for the Design Institute of Australia's Graduate of the Year Awards.[25]
