Hans T. Sy (born September 1955) is a Filipino businessman.^[1] He is chairman of the executive committee of SM Prime Holdings and has been a director of the company since 1994.^[2] He is the fourth child of Henry Sy Sr., founder of the SM Group.^[3]

Early life and education

Sy is one of six children of Henry Sy Sr. and Felicidad Tan Sy.^[4] His siblings are Teresita Sy-Coson, Elizabeth Sy, Henry Sy Jr., Herbert Sy, and Harley Sy.^[5] He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from De La Salle University.^[6]

Career

Sy has served as the company’s director of SM Prime Holdings^[7] since April 1994 and company president up until September 2016,^[8] after which he remained as chairman of the executive committee.^[9] During his tenure, company led the development and expansion of its mall and property businesses in the Philippines and overseas.^[10]

He has also held positions in banking, real estate, mall operations, leisure, and entertainment companies within the SM group.^[11] Outside SM Prime he is chairman of China Banking Corporation, adviser to the board of SM Investments Corporation, and chairman of National University.^[12]

Other activities

Sy also has had exposure to disaster risk reduction and resilience,^[13] private sector engagements associated with the UN (United Nations) on DRR and work on education via National University, and child healthcare support programmes.^[14]

Awards and recognition

In 2025 the Management Association of the Philippines named Sy its Management Person of the Year.^[15] Other awards listed in company and press reports include the Philippine Retailers Association President’s Award (2024),^[16] recognition as an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Corporate Directors (2024),^[17] and the Ten Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Award, among others.^[18]
