Firm History

The firm was founded in 2012 by Deepak Gupta, who previously served as senior counsel at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and before that at the Public Citizen Litigation Group.

Originally incorporated (or styled) as “Gupta Beck”, the firm became known as Gupta Wessler in 2015 when Matthew Wessler joined as a named principal. The firm has since grown to include offices in Washington, D.C.; San Francisco, California; and Cambridge, Massachusetts. The firm also runs the Supreme Court Litigation Clinic at Harvard Law School.

Since its founding, Gupta Wessler has argued and won numerous high-impact cases before the United States Supreme Court and appellate courts nationwide. The firm’s docket spans constitutional law, consumer protection, class actions, arbitration, and access to justice. Some examples include:

• Ford Motor Co. v. Montana Eighth Judicial District Court, 592 U.S. 351 (2021). Gupta Wessler represented consumers injured by defective Ford vehicles in Montana and Minnesota. The Supreme Court held, 8–0, that state courts may exercise specific personal jurisdiction over automakers that extensively market, sell, and service their products in-state—even if the particular vehicle at issue was sold elsewhere. The decision strengthened plaintiffs’ ability to sue national corporations in their home states.
• Cantero v. Bank of America, N.A., 601 U.S. ___ (2024). The firm represented homeowners challenging Bank of America’s refusal to pay interest on mortgage-escrow accounts. The Court unanimously vacated and remanded, reaffirming that the Dodd–Frank Act limits federal pre-emption of state consumer-protection laws.
• Laboratory Corp. of America Holdings v. Davis, 602 U.S. ___ (2025). Gupta Wessler represented class-action plaintiffs and successfully urged the Court to dismiss the writ as improvidently granted in a closely watched case about Article III standing in class actions. The dismissal preserved plaintiffs’ ability to certify damages classes despite defense arguments about individualized injury.
• Stanley v. City of Sanford, 602 U.S. ___ (2025). The firm represented a retired firefighter asserting that the Americans with Disabilities Act covers discrimination in post-employment benefit programs. The case highlighted ADA protections for former public employees.
