About
[edit]Green Man Entry is paved with historic, dark hand cut Rowley Rag cobble setts taken from Turners Hill Quarry. These setts used to line many of the streets and market place within the town. The original medieval passageway once linked Castle Street and Tower Street. The current passageway was built in 1793. To the right of the passageway was once the Green Man Inn, which was also first recorded in 1793 before closing in 1975. It is this inn that the current passageway gained its name. The passageway is reportedly haunted with reports of footsteps echoing along the cobbles and sightings of a man in old working clothes and cap wandering down the passageway before disappearing.
A decorative arch was installed at the rear of the passageway in 2014[1].

Green Man plaque

Above the entrance to the passageway is the Green Man plaque, designed and produced by sculptor Steve Field and modelled by John McKenna of Turnberry, Ayreshire[2]. It was installed above the passageway in 1995. The current plaque is the second one after the original was stolen in 2012[3].
