Draft:Goffredo Maria Haus

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Goffredo Maria Haus is an Italian computer scientist whose work has focused on music informatics, multimedia systems and the digital preservation of musical heritage. He was a professor of computer science at the University of Milan, where he founded the Laboratory of Music Informatics (Laboratorio di Informatica Musicale, LIM). Haus participated in the development and standardisation of IEEE 1599, an XML-based format for representing musical works through interconnected symbolic, notational, performance and audio layers.[1][2]

Education and academic career

[edit]

Haus graduated in physics from the University of Milan in 1976. He subsequently worked at the university's Institute of Cybernetics, becoming a researcher in 1984, an associate professor in 1991 and a full professor of computer science in 2001.[3] His research has addressed formal descriptions of musical processes, multimedia representation and the application of information technology to the preservation and use of musical collections.[1][4]

In the early 1980s he was among the founders of the Associazione di Informatica Musicale Italiana (AIMI). He served as its vice-president from 1981 to 1983, president from 1984 to 1986 and treasurer from 1987 to 1989.[3] In 1985 he founded the Laboratory of Music Informatics at the University of Milan. The laboratory developed research in computer-generated music, formal models of musical processes, audio processing, multimedia archives and music encoding.[1][5]

IEEE activities and IEEE 1599

[edit]

Haus's involvement in IEEE music-computing initiatives began with the establishment of the IEEE Computer Society Task Force on Computer Generated Music in 1992. The initiative became the Technical Committee on Computer Generated Music in 1994; Haus founded and chaired the committee and, with Denis L. Baggi, edited its newsletter during the 1990s.[3][6]

In 2001 the IEEE Standards Association approved Project Authorization Request 1599, initially titled Recommended Practice for the Definition of a Commonly Acceptable Musical Application Using the XML Language. A working group on musical applications of XML was subsequently formed. Haus was one of its founders and served at different stages as official reporter and chair.[6][7] The proposal was presented to the research community at the IEEE International Conference on Musical Application Using XML, held in Milan in 2002. Following the IEEE balloting process, it was published in 2008 as IEEE 1599-2008.[6][8] Haus and Baggi later edited a collected volume on the standard and its applications.[9]

Degree programmes and teaching

[edit]

Haus and philosopher Elio Franzini promoted the creation of the University of Milan bachelor's programme in Scienze e tecnologie della comunicazione musicale (Science and Technology of Music Communication) between 2000 and 2002. The programme was subsequently renamed Informatica musicale (Music Informatics).[3][1] He later coordinated an interdisciplinary group that established the bachelor's programme in science and technology for the study and preservation of cultural heritage and information media.[3] He also contributed to the creation of postgraduate programmes in the digitisation and preservation of information resources and, from 2020, a second-level master's programme in digital humanities.[3][10]

From 2008 to 2012 he chaired the teaching board for conservation and diagnostics of cultural heritage.[3]

University administration

[edit]

At the University of Milan, Haus directed the Department of Computer Science and Communication from 2004 to 2010 and the Department of Computer Science from 2012 to 2017. He served on the university's board of directors from 2006 to 2012 and on its academic senate from 2015 to 2017.[3] From 2018 until his retirement in 2023, he was vice-rector with responsibility for digital innovation, ICT services, and strategic and special projects. His portfolio included university digital infrastructure, long-term preservation of research and cultural-heritage data, experimental 5G services and the Virtual Museum of the University of Milan.[3]

Haus also co-founded the University of Milan Orchestra in 1999 and served as its president for its first two decades.[3]

Musical-heritage projects

[edit]

Through the LIM, Haus directed or coordinated projects for the digitisation and organisation of musical archives. These included work on the sound and multimedia collections of La Scala, the sound archive of the Bolshoi Theatre, the Archivio Storico Ricordi and collections included in the Italian Ministry of Culture's Italian Music Network.[1][3] His research group also collaborated with broadcasters, libraries and cultural institutions on systems for preservation, cataloguing and synchronised access to musical documents.[3]
