The Global Race Engine is a common engine formula designed to be used across various auto racing championships.

History

The concept of the Global Race Engine was first conceived by Ulrich Baretzky, the head of Audi Sport's engine development program for endurance racing, in 2008.[1] The platform was intended to reduce the cost of development for vehicle manufacturers and tuners by providing a uniform engine block layout that could be used across multiple championships.[2]

The regulation set was first introduced in 2011, initially capped at 1.6L for the World Rally Championship and World Touring Car Championship but later accommodated for 2.0L units with turbochargers to be used in the likes of Formula Three and rallycross.[3][4] The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile attempted to introduce a variant of the regulations into Formula One for 2013, mating the engines to a hybrid system, but this was later rejected in favour of a V6 configuration.[5][6]

The Global Race Engine formula has since been adopted in Formula 4,[7] Formula Regional,[8] and TCR Touring Cars,[9] and have been proposed for use in LMP2.[10] Prior to 2014, a variant of the Global Race Engine was developed for the Japanese domestic motorsport scene; known as the Nippon Race Engine, it was introduced into the Super GT and Super Formula Championships where it remains in use as of 2026.[11]
