Dr. Margaret Simonian Receives Global Australian Award 2025

The Global Australian Awards on December 4, 2025 recognized Dr. Margaret Simonian for her lifetime achievement in Health and Life Sciences. A presentation and celebration were held in Los Angeles and Sydney, Australia on December 11th. The Global Australian Award celebrates Australians living abroad who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary talent, ambition, and visionary achievements, showcasing the remarkable impact of their contributions on the global stage.

Born in Iraq to Armenian parents, her father is Karekin Simonian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karekin_Simonian) and mother Zvart Vartanian. As a young adult she relocated to Australia by herself, her resilience, tenacity and courage helped her forge a future in a new country, culture and language.

Dr. Margaret Simonian (MPhil, PhD) earned her Doctorate in Advanced Medicine from the Australian School of Advanced Medicine, Department of Neurosurgery, Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia. She has served as a Research Scientist at Macquarie University and later as a Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Neurology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Centre. For many years, Dr. Simonian has been with the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where she has made significant contributions to both research and academic teaching in her field. Her research focuses on the application of Proteomics, Molecular Biology, and Radioproteomics in biomarker discovery and in advancing drug development and therapeutic strategies for diseases such as Brain Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs), Brain Tumors, and Liver and Prostate Cancers. Notably, her pioneering work on Brain AVMs, which started at Macquarie Uni and continued at UCLA, was the first worldwide to employ proteomics to identify protein targets for vascular and molecular therapy following radiosurgery. This groundbreaking research has led to numerous publications and continues today at Macquarie University. Her proteomics research on liver cancer Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) is also among the few such studies conducted on an international scale. While working at UCLA, she initiated and fostered collaborations at the John Wayne Cancer Institute (Los Angeles), and the Scripps Research Institute (San Diego), resulting in several publications. More recently she has been leading initiatives at UCLA to integrate proteomics with radiology imaging contributing to the establishment and advancement of the emerging field of radioproteomics. The objective of this work is to enhance diagnostic accuracy and support personalized treatment strategies for cancer patients undergoing radiological therapies.

Dr. Simonian serves as an Editor and Editorial Board Member for multiple scientific journals, as well as a recognized peer reviewer for many others. She is also a member of the Organizing Committee for the International Conference on Precision Medicine. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, presented her work at numerous international conferences, and has received multiple awards and certificates of achievement. In addition, she lectures university courses in Chemistry and Biochemistry.
