History
[edit]Gilson was founded in 1957 by Warren Gilson as Gilson Medical Electronics. The company initially focused on scientific instrumentation used in physiology and medical research, including electroencephalography (EEG) and oxygen measurement systems.
During the 1970s, the company introduced the PIPETMAN adjustable-volume micropipette,[4] a laboratory instrument designed to improve the accuracy and convenience of liquid handling. The product became one of the company's most recognized technologies and contributed to broader adoption of adjustable-volume pipetting[5] in laboratory workflows. During the same period, Gilson expanded internationally with the establishment of operations in France.
In the 1980s, Gilson expanded into laboratory automation through the development of liquid handling systems and robotic sample preparation technologies[6]. Products introduced during this period included automated liquid handlers and early XYZ robotic platforms designed for higher-throughput laboratory workflows.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, the company broadened its portfolio to include chromatography components, sample preparation systems, solid phase extraction technologies[7], software platforms, and integrated laboratory workflow solutions.
