The Gibong River is a river in Agusan del Sur, Philippines. It flows through the municipality of Prosperidad and serves as a major tributary feeding water directly into the Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary network.
History
[edit]Before Spanish colonization, the indigenous Manobo built settlements along the riverbanks. Their primary village, called Culilay, sat at the junction of the Sianib and Gibong rivers. Municipal records identify this specific junction as the foundation site of modern-day Prosperidad.[1]
The river is tied to the annual Naliyagan Festival, where local groups hold traditional bauto (canoe) races on the water to mimic pre-colonial travel methods.
Geography and hydrology
[edit]The river drains the central mountains of Agusan del Sur, flowing southwest into the northern section of the Agusan Marsh.
People use the river as a boat route to reach Binaba Falls, a limestone waterfall in the area. Travel requires a 15-minute motorboat trip or a 45-minute manual paddle from the public wharf at Barangay Poblacion.[2]
During the rainy season, heavy downpours cause the river to swell. The Philippine government operates a water-level monitoring station along the channel. Local disaster risk councils track these levels to issue early flood warnings for downstream farming villages.[3]
Infrastructure and economic use

[edit]The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) Region XIII runs the Gibong River Irrigation System (Gibong RIS) here. The facility uses a concrete diversion dam to direct water through canals, irrigating around 6,000 hectares of lowland rice fields across Prosperidad and nearby towns.[4] The Prosperidad Water District also treats water extracted from the river reservoir to supply drinking water to local households.
Transit
[edit]Three parallel concrete bridges cross the river at Barangay Bahbah along the Maharlika Highway.[5] These bridges connect the municipal center to the rest of the Caraga region. The government built a public boardwalk near the bridges to give residents access for kayaking and small boats.[6]
