From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gaetan Algoet

Gaetan Algoet (born 7 January 1964) is a Belgian author and maritime researcher known for his work on historical shipwrecks, piracy, and geographical reconstructions. His work is based on early historical and mythological sources. He has published works in Dutch, English, German, and French. He is active as an independent researcher based in Belgium.

Biography

[edit]

Algoet was born in Germany. He worked for the Belgian Air Force. He is also certified Dive Master.

His interest in maritime research began in the Dominican Republic, where he met Czech marine archaeologist Lubos Kordac. He invited Algoet to conduct archival research on the French shipwreck La Viette with the American organization North Caribbean Research (NCR). This led to their first collaborative publication.

In 2009, Algoet made his debut as an author in cooperation with Lubos Kordac. Their book Verborgen en verloren schatten in de Dominicaanse Republiek was published in 2010 by Free Musketeers.

Over the following years, Algoet published through various Dutch and Belgian publishers before establishing his own imprint, Algoet Publishing. His works cover maritime history, piracy, and historical geography, including studies on Hispaniola, the Spanish Plate Fleet, and medieval legends.

In 2026, Algoet received regional media attention for his independent geographical reconstruction of the location of Avalon. This is a legendary island described in medieval chronicles. His findings were featured by the Belgian regional broadcaster ROBtv.[1]

Algoet’s archival research on historical shipwrecks, including the Nuestra Señora de la Concepción, is cited on the English Wikipedia in the articles San Miguel (1551 shipwreck) and List of shipwrecks in the 16th century.

His research was referenced in the Brazilian historical study A Profundeza Do Mar Azul (2020) by historian and archaeologist Dalton Delfini Maziero. He cited Algoet’s work on early colonial shipwrecks.[2]

Algoet is listed as a contributing author by Field Manor, a historical museum in Florida, which highlights his co-authorship of A Hundred Giants: The French Huguenot Experience in Florida: 1562–1565.[3]

He is also included on the Signum Ops Authors Page, an American platform documenting contributors to historical and archaeological publications.[4]

A maritime researcher on the TreasureNet forum described Algoet as “a marine archaeologist and very reliable man,” noting his expertise in early Dutch script and archival interpretation.[5]

Standaard Boekhandel, a major Belgian bookseller, published a redactional description of Algoet’s book Avalon onthuld – Het verloren Koninkrijk, summarizing his methodology and referencing regional media coverage.[6]
