GQ, abbreviated from Girls Quartet, is an American female barbershop a cappella quartet based in Baltimore, Maryland. Formed in 2012, they quickly won a Sweet Adelines International contest for quartet singers age 25 and under. In July 2026, they became the first women's quartet to win the Barbershop Harmony Society's international quartet competition.
History
[edit]After first singing together in 2011,[1] the quartet formed officially in 2012, the year they won the Sweet Adelines International Rising Star competition for 2013.[2] GQ placed second at the 2012 Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Festival,[3] after winning the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Harmony Sweepstakes regional competition.[4] In 2019, they placed third in the Sweet Adelines International quartet contest.[5] GQ began competing internationally with the Barbershop Harmony Society in 2022, placing fourth, and they were fifth in the 2025 competition.[6][7][8] In July 2026, the quartet won the BHS international competion in St. Louis, Missouri, becoming the first female quartet to take the society's top honor.[6][9]
One of GQ's early performances was a cover of 1965's "I'm into Something Good" by Herman's Hermits, and a 2013 video of the rendition has collected millions of views on YouTube.[1]
Three of the quartet members are music teachers, two of them with Baltimore County Public Schools,[10] and lead Katie Gillis sings professionally while also farming.[11] Bass singer Samantha Tramack also directs the Metro Voices chorus, based in Alexandria, Virginia, which received a top-twenty BHS international ranking in 2026.[12]
