Educational label for GIF animated sticker format used in messaging apps

GIF stickers (also known as animated stickers or transparent animated stickers) are a type of digital sticker used in messaging applications. Unlike traditional GIFs, which typically have a solid rectangular background, GIF stickers are designed with transparency so that the animated subject appears to float over the chat interface.

Characteristics

The main distinguishing feature of GIF stickers is their support for alpha transparency. This allows the animated content to blend with any chat background rather than appearing inside a fixed rectangular frame. They are commonly used for reactions, expressions, and short looping animations in private and group conversations.

Technical formats

[edit]
Comparison of common animated sticker file formats

Messaging platforms support several formats for animated stickers:

  • GIF – Legacy raster format with limited color support and basic transparency.
  • Animated WebP – Modern format with better compression and full alpha transparency (widely used on WhatsApp).
  • APNG – Animated PNG with full color and transparency support (used on some platforms including iMessage).
  • TGS – Vector-based format based on Lottie, used primarily by Telegram for small file sizes and smooth animation.

History

[edit]

Static stickers became popular in messaging apps in the early 2010s, particularly with the Japanese app LINE. Animated and transparent stickers later gained wider adoption as platforms such as Telegram, WhatsApp, and others added support for more advanced formats between 2018 and 2020.

Usage

[edit]

Animated stickers are frequently used in place of text or emoji to convey emotion, humor, or reactions. Studies of messaging behavior have shown that stickers can form a noticeable portion of messages in casual conversations, particularly among younger users.
