Fresh Prep (legally Fresh Prep Foods Inc.) is a Canadian meal kit delivery company headquartered in Vancouver, British Columbia. Founded in 2015, the company delivers meal kits and prepared meals in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec.[2] It is known for its reusable "Zero Waste Kit" packaging, which replaces most single-use packaging with returnable containers.[3][4]
History
[edit]Fresh Prep was conceived in 2014 by childhood friends Husein Rahemtulla, Dhruv Sood, and Becky Brauer, and launched in Vancouver in 2015, initially operating out of a basement kitchen in the city's Chinatown neighbourhood.[1][5]
The company raised C$3.3 million in late 2018 in a round led by First West Capital.[6] In 2020, it raised a C$7 million Series A round led by Renewal Funds,[7] followed in 2021 by a C$21 million Series B round led by Yellow Point Equity Partners to fund expansion into new markets.[8][9]
In March 2023, Fresh Prep acquired Peko Produce, a Vancouver-based surplus-grocery delivery startup.[10] In March 2024, it acquired the assets of Cook it (Cook it Recipes Inc.), a Montreal-based meal kit company, expanding its operations into Quebec and Ontario.[11]
In July 2025, growth-equity firm SEMCAP Food & Nutrition announced a minority investment in the company. At the time, Fresh Prep reported more than C$100 million in annual revenue.[2][1]
Products and operations
[edit]Fresh Prep sells subscription meal kits containing pre-portioned ingredients and recipes, as well as ready-to-eat meals. Orders are delivered in reusable insulated cooler bags that are collected on subsequent deliveries.[3]
The company's "Zero Waste Kit" packages ingredients in reusable polypropylene cups of standardized sizes that fit into a returnable tray. According to the company, single-use packaging accounts for roughly five percent of its shipment weight, compared with an industry norm in which the large majority of meal kit shipment weight is single-use packaging.[4][3]
Recognition
[edit]Fresh Prep is a Certified B Corporation.[1] The company appeared on The Globe and Mail's Canada's Top Growing Companies ranking, reporting revenue growth of 540 percent between 2018 and 2020.[3] In 2025, its founders were named among Ernst and Young's Entrepreneurs of the Year.[1] The company has been the subject of a business school teaching case published by Ivey Business School.[12]
