Draft:Franc Ouest

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franc Ouest is a French-language documentary podcast series presented by the Association des francophones des Kootenays Ouest (AFKO, the West Kootenays Francophone Association), based in Nelson, British Columbia. Created and hosted by Patrick Lac, the series profiles Francophones and Francophiles of the West Kootenay region of British Columbia through long, informal interviews.[1] It is distributed on Radio-Canada OHdio in collaboration with AFKO and WebOuest, with support from the Department of Canadian Heritage.

Background

[edit]

Lac, originally from Ontario and a graduate in psychology from the Université du Québec à Montréal, was hired as AFKO's podcast coordinator after relocating to the West Kootenays.[1] He has said the series is less concerned with francophone identity as a subject in itself than with individual life stories told in French, and that it grew out of a committee process identifying potential interview subjects and themes, including LGBTQ+ issues, Indigenous issues, and youth entrepreneurship.[1] The project has also included workshops in the region's francophone schools.[1]

Season 1: Francophonie Sauvage (2022)

[edit]

The first season, Francophonie Sauvage, launched in 2022 with interview subjects including painter Stéphanie Gauvin, slackline athlete Mia Noblet, and drag performer Johnny Poutina (Alex Pilon).[1] The season drew approximately 6,500 plays in total, about 4,000 of them in its first year, with listeners concentrated in Quebec and British Columbia, and was also picked up by community radio stations.[2]

Season 2: Nature + Elles (2024)

[edit]

The second season, Nature + Elles, comprises 15 episodes profiling 12 French-speaking women active in outdoor sports across the West Kootenays, from Revelstoke to Nelson by way of Creston, Rossland, Trail, and Castlegar.[3] It launched March 8, 2024, to coincide with International Women's Day and Le Mois de la Francophonie, with new episodes released weekly on Fridays beginning February 9, three days after an early release on WebOuest.ca.[3]

Interview subjects included geologist and backcountry snowboarder Mélanie Mercier, an opponent of a proposed mining project near Rossland; anthropologist and snowboarder Alexandra Pronovost; outdoor guide Fannie Dufour; entrepreneur Sabrina Hémond, founder of the reusable hand-warmer company Hot Poc; and former national alpine ski team member Mélanie Bernier, now an architect.[3][2] Reviewers noted the season's recurring focus on impostor syndrome among women in outdoor and adventure sports.[3] A video component, supported by WebOuest, was added to the podcast for the first time in this season.[2]

Accompanying documentary

[edit]

The second season was accompanied by a 30-minute short documentary examining environmental threats facing the West Kootenays, following participants practising their sports in areas affected by proposed mining projects, industrial logging, and ski resort development.[3]

Reception

[edit]

Nature + Elles received coverage on Radio-Canada's OHdio programs Panorama (February 29, 2024) and Culture et Confiture (March 9, 2024), and on CBC Radio West, which described it as following "prominent women tackling their favourite sports" to mark International Women's Day and Francophone Month.[4] The series was also profiled in British Columbia History, the quarterly magazine of the British Columbia Historical Federation.[3]

Distribution

[edit]

Episodes are released on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and AFKO.ca.[3]
