FolkWorks is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a Board of Directors. It is affiliated with the Country Dance and Song Society(CDSS). It had been supported by members, advertisers and a few grants. In 2020 it was changed from a membership based to donation-based organization.

FolkWorks is the source for folk/roots/traditional music, dance, and related folk arts. FolkWorks features articles and columns, interviews and CD reviews contributed by folks in the community. The event calendar contains both live and virtual events, with the ability to filter by location and genre. They are provided directly by artists, venues, producers in the community. It can be found at folkworks.org.

History

FolkWorks started as a bi-monthly hardcopy newspaper with the intent of promoting music, dance, and storytelling events (concerts, dances, festivals, house concerts) in the greater Southern California area. The FolkWorks newspaper was first published in January 2001. It was 16 pages and contained an interview with John McCutcheon, a couple of CD reviews, listings of House Concerts, Venues, Coffee Houses and Jam Sessions and dances (from African to Contra to Hungarian and more. It had a crude two-page event calendar and a more extensive list of Special Events. It featured The Living Tradition, a folk organization based in Orange County, CA. It was created by, written by and distributed by volunteers. The first issue print run was 10,000 copies. It grew to 32 pages with 15,000 copies. FolkWorks was distributed from Santa Barbara to San Diego, from Santa Monica to San Bernardino.

At the end of 2007, FolkWorks migrated to an all online ezine. It continued to feature CD, film, and concert reviews, columns and an expanded events calendar. In January 2020, the website was totally overhauled to become a modern, responsive website featuring the same content that was the original content.

Since 2001, FolkWorks has also produced concerts, music and dance festivals (including the Fiddling Frog Dance Festival).
