Previously, Shapiro served as President of IFC and Sundance Channel, Executive Vice President of Digital Enterprises at NBCUniversal (where he founded the streaming service Seeso), and President of National Lampoon, Inc..[3][4]

Executive career and television production

[edit]

During his tenure as President of IFC and Sundance Channel, Shapiro executive produced several television series and documentary films. His production credits during this period include Portlandia (which received a Peabody Award), the documentary series Brick City (Peabody Award recipient and Emmy nominee), and the interview series Dinner for Five (Emmy nominee).[1]

In 2013, Shapiro launched the cable channel Pivot TV. He subsequently joined NBCUniversal as Executive Vice President of Digital Enterprises, where he spearheaded the creation and 2016 launch of the comedy subscription streaming service Seeso.[3] He has executive produced additional television and film projects, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt's HitRecord on TV (Emmy Award winner), Take My Wife, Harmonquest, and the Sundance documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated.[1]

ESHAP and Media Cartography

[edit]

Shapiro operates ESHAP, a creator-driven media research and consultancy, through which he publishes the industry analysis newsletter Media War & Peace.[2]

In 2020, Deadline Hollywood published Shapiro's first "Media Universe Map," an infographic mapping the relative valuations, subscriber counts, and market share of major tech, media, and streaming entities.[1] The graphic gained broad traction in entertainment trade reporting, leading to Shapiro being characterized as a "media cartographer."[2]

Shapiro curates and hosts industry events based on his media analysis. He produces the annual Media Universe Summit at the StreamTV Show in Denver, Colorado, focusing on television economics and audience trends.[5] In 2026, he curated the inaugural StreamTV Europe conference in Lisbon, Portugal.[6] Additionally, Shapiro has delivered keynote addresses at global media and technology trade conventions, including IBC, MIPCOM, NATPE, CES, and SXSW.[1]

In November 2025, Shapiro executive produced the independent comedy film SKIT, written and directed by Des Lombardo and Badr Mastrouq.[7] Distributed by Filmhub and premiered on Tubi, the mockumentary is set in 2007 and follows three college students attempting to create a viral video during the early era of YouTube.[7] Shapiro produced the micro-budget film through ESHAP as a case study in creator-led distribution and low-cost production models.[8]

Media War & Peace

[edit]

Shapiro writes and publishes Media War & Peace, a weekly industry newsletter on Substack.[9] The publication analyzes global entertainment economics, streaming business models, corporate restructuring, and technology shifts within the media landscape.[9]

The Media Odyssey

[edit]

In 2024, Shapiro co-created and began co-hosting The Media Odyssey, a weekly media business podcast, alongside streaming strategist Marion Ranchet.[10] The podcast analyzes international television market trends, creator economy dynamics, and platform viewing metrics.

The Affinity Economy

[edit]

In late 2025, Shapiro introduced the concept of the "Affinity Economy" through industry keynotes and presentations, including a masterclass with PreciseTV and sessions at MIP London.[11][12] The thesis posits that the convergence of streaming and social media platforms has shifted entertainment valuation from broad, passive audience reach to community-driven engagement, niche fandom, and creator-led distribution models.[12] Shapiro highlighted the micro-budget film SKIT (2025) as an operational case study for the model, advocating for direct audience alignment over traditional studio distribution frameworks.[13]

Creator Ecosphere Map

[edit]

In October 2025, Shapiro unveiled the "Creator Ecosphere Map" at Advertising Week New York, created in collaboration with Shira Lazar of What's Trending and Filmhub. The infographic maps digital platforms, creator-led studios, and monetization tools across the creator economy, introducing a metric called "Engagement Quality" (EQ) to measure audience interaction relative to raw follower counts.

ESHAP Cross-Screen Attention Index

[edit]

In 2026, Shapiro launched the ESHAP Cross-Screen Attention Index, a public media analytics tool designed to measure total video viewership and attention share across television and mobile screens. The index aggregates cross-platform consumption data across eight global markets (including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Brazil, and Mexico), cross-referencing traditional television measurement datasets (such as Nielsen, BARB, and Kantar) with mobile analytics data from Comscore and Sensor Tower. The tool tracks shifts in media consumption across age demographics, evaluating the redistribution of viewing time between linear television, subscription video on demand, and mobile video platforms such as YouTube and TikTok.
