EuroCIS is a trade fair for retail technology held at the Messe Düsseldorf exhibition grounds in Düsseldorf, Germany. It takes place annually. In years when EuroShop is staged, EuroCIS forms one of that fair's sections rather than a separate event.[1] Exhibits cover information technology for retail and wholesale businesses, including checkout and payment systems, merchandise management, customer analytics and applications of artificial intelligence.[2]

History

[edit]

Retail technology developed in shorter cycles than the three-year interval of EuroShop. Messe Düsseldorf therefore introduced a separate event to be held between EuroShop editions. The first, called "Technology Forum 97", ran from 28 to 30 October 1997 as a combined exhibition and congress at the Stadthalle and the Congress Center Süd. It drew 105 exhibitors from seven countries and 1,821 trade visitors.[3]

In 2000 the event, by then renamed "Retail Technology", moved into an exhibition hall and recorded almost 200 exhibitors, 5,000 square metres of net space and more than 4,700 trade visitors. When EuroShop was restructured in 2002, the name EuroCIS was first applied to its technology section. The separate fair was renamed accordingly and has carried the name since 2003. It has been held annually since 2006 and has occupied two exhibition halls since 2015.[3]

Exhibits

[edit]

The fair covers technology and services for retail and wholesale businesses. Categories include point-of-sale systems and checkout technology, payment processing and cash handling, merchandise management and supply chain management, RFID and barcode technology, labelling systems, and access control and security equipment.[4] Loss prevention and surveillance equipment form a further group.[5]

Subjects at the 2025 edition included artificial intelligence applied to stock control, pricing and demand forecasting, along with self-checkout systems, electronic shelf labels, smart shelving and service robots.[2] Special display areas for cybersecurity and for food service technology were introduced that year.[6]

Admission is restricted to trade visitors. The fair addresses retailers and wholesalers, hospitality and food service operators, the leisure industry, financial services providers, and suppliers from the information technology, e-commerce and security sectors.[7]

Attendance

[edit]

The 2025 edition, the most recent staged separately from EuroShop, was attended by 500 exhibitors from 37 countries and more than 14,000 trade visitors from 95 countries. It was the largest edition held to that date.[8][6] Registration data published by the organiser record 14,471 visitors from 97 countries and 15,174 square metres of net exhibition space.[9]

The following separate edition is scheduled for 16 to 18 February 2027.[10]

Supporting programme

[edit]

Presentations and panel discussions on technology trends and case studies are held on several stages, alongside guided tours and special display areas, among them a hub for start-up companies.[6] The EHI Retail Institute is a partner of the event and organises part of the accompanying programme.[7]

EHI presents the retail technology awards europe (reta awards) at the fair to retailers for their use of new technology. Sixteen winners in six categories were named in 2025.[11]
