Equinox Desktop Environment (EDE) is an open source and free desktop environment created in 2003 with the aim of providing a lightweight, fast, simple user experience. It is written in C++, uses the Fast Light Toolkit (FLTK) for its graphical user interface,[2] and PekWM as its default window manager.[3]
History
[edit]EDE's development began in 2000 by Martin Pekar. Other early contributors were Mikko Lähteenmäki, Dejan Lekic, and Szasz Pal.[4] In September 2002, project moved to SourceForge. Shortly, Sanel Zukan joined the project, following with Vedran Ljubović.[citation needed]
As of 2009, Sanel Zukan was recognized as the main developer and as project head.[5]
With the release of 2.0, EDE began following the guidelines of freedesktop.org.[6]
Features
[edit]EDE is lightweight and low-resource, it can run in as little as 128 MB of random-access memory (RAM), making it useful for some older systems.[7] It includes few pre-installed apps as its philosophy is to let users decide what they want to use for each task and which programs they want to install.[2]
It's graphical interface imitates Windows 95, making it easier to use for users who know the Windows interface.[8]
Even though version 2.2 was announced, it was never released to the public.[9]
