Engineer is the annual national-level technical symposium of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) in Surathkal, India. Established in 2005, it has developed into a large student-run technical festival in India. The four-day event is traditionally held in the final week of October and draws over 6,000 students from approximately 150 colleges globally. The festival operates under the official motto "Think. Create. Engineer" and uses a Penrose Triangle as its emblem. It includes competitive events, professional workshops, guest lectures, and technological exhibitions.

History

Prior to 2005, individual engineering departments and registered student clubs at NITK Surathkal hosted independent, small-scale technical events throughout the academic year. In 2005, the student council unified these events into a single national festival named Engineer. The inaugural edition combined branch-specific challenges, programming contests, and robotics activities. The festival subsequently expanded its categories to include broader specialisations, international participation, and technology initiatives addressing social issues.

Growth and Yearly Development

The development of Engineer has involved the addition of events and areas of specialisation over successive editions.

• 2005 (Inception): Engineer was launched as an amalgamation of three smaller internal technical festivals. The programme focused primarily on paper presentations, code marathons, and foundational design problems.
• 2006: The competitive programme was expanded with the introduction of "Shrishti", an event focused on engineering solutions for community development, alongside robotics events such as Automata and Perfect Machine.
• 2007: The festival recorded its first formal international participation, including competitors and online submissions from outside India.
• 2010 ("Golden Edition"): The edition coincided with the Golden Jubilee year celebrations of NITK Surathkal. It included enhanced funding, industry-backed enterprise events, and corporate sponsorships.
• 2011: The festival hosted the institute's inaugural TEDxNITK conference, which included multidisciplinary talks covering social, environmental, and engineering innovations.
• 2018: The annual NITK Model United Nations (MUN) conference was formally introduced under the festival banner, incorporating committees based on the central theme of the year's festival.
• Recent Developments: The event has incorporated activities related to emerging technologies, including cloud-computing challenges, generative AI hackathons, and technology exhibitions conducted at night.
• 2026: Engineer is an annual national-level technical symposium organised by NITK's Technical Activities Committee. The committee and its convenor are elected by the students of NITK at the start of each academic term.

Hackathons

The Engineer Hackathon held at NITK Surathkal is a 24-hour event aimed at promoting innovation by gathering some of the most talented individuals to address real-world problems. Focusing on areas such as sustainability, social good, and the use of technology for positive change, the hackathon provides a platform for creative problem solving and for engineering solutions that make an impact. During the event, the participants work together, develop prototypes, and present their solutions under pressure, at the same time gaining insights from workshops led by industry professionals and from keynotes given by experts. It is an environment in which ideas develop quickly and where purpose is combined with cutting-edge technology.

Robocon Bot Expo

At the Bot Expo this year, the NITK Robocon Team is showing off a remarkable example of robotic innovation and technical skill. The robots, which are designed to deal with real-world problems and carry out complicated tasks, highlight the team's proficiency in mechanical design, electronics, and programming.
