Elena Armas (born 1990) is the pen name of a Spanish romance novelist and former chemical engineer. She is best known for her debut novel, The Spanish Love Deception, which she initially self-published in 2021. The novel gained widespread attention through BookTok, was subsequently acquired by Atria Books, became a New York Times bestseller, and won the 2021 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Debut Novel.[1][2]

Armas's subsequent novels include The American Roommate Experiment (2022), The Long Game (2023), and The Fiancé Dilemma (2024). Her work has been associated with the popularity of contemporary romance fiction on social-media platforms and with the revival of "slow-burn" romantic comedy in commercial publishing.[3]

Early life and education

Armas was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1990 and was raised between Alella and Badalona, in the province of Barcelona.[1][4] "Elena Armas" is a pen name; according to a 2023 profile in El País, Elena is her real first name, while Armas is not her legal surname.[1]

She spent part of her university years in Belfast and later completed a master's degree in crystallography.[1] Armas has a degree in chemical engineering and worked in engineering before becoming a full-time writer.[5] After completing her studies, she lived in Germany, where her work involved research and consulting related to materials for automobile batteries.[1]

Before publishing fiction, Armas was active as a book blogger and ran the romance-focused Instagram account @thebibliotheque. El País reported that the account had approximately 80,000 followers before the publication of her first novel.[1]

Career

Armas began writing The Spanish Love Deception during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The premise was partly inspired by an invitation to her cousin's wedding in Spain while Armas was living abroad.[1][4] She wrote the novel in English and self-published it in 2021 while still working in engineering.[1] The novel initially developed an audience through online romance-reading communities. In July 2021, a TikTok video about the book went viral, causing a sharp increase in sales and drawing the attention of literary agents and publishers.[1] Armas subsequently signed a publishing agreement with Atria Books, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, left her engineering career, and became a full-time writer.[1]

Atria published a trade paperback edition of The Spanish Love Deception in 2022. Publishers Weekly gave the novel a positive review, describing its protagonists' chemistry, slow-building romance, and Spanish setting as central to its appeal.[6] The book became a bestseller and won the 2021 Goodreads Choice Award for Best Debut Novel.[2] In June 2022, BCDF Pictures acquired the film rights to the novel, with filmmaker Peter Hutchings attached to adapt it for the screen.[7]

Armas followed her debut with The American Roommate Experiment in 2022. The novel is set in the same fictional universe as The Spanish Love Deception and follows Rosie Graham and Lucas Martín. Armas has said that aspects of Rosie's transition from engineering to romance writing were inspired by her own experience.[8] Her third novel, The Long Game, was published in 2023. The novel follows a soccer executive and a retired goalkeeper who work together with a children's soccer team in a small North Carolina town. Publishers Weekly praised the characterization and the pacing of the central enemies-to-lovers romance.[9] The Fiancé Dilemma, published in July 2024, returned to the setting introduced in The Long Game. Its story follows Josie Moore and Matthew Flanagan in a fake-engagement romance.[10]

In 2024, Armas served as executive producer of the scripted romantic-comedy audiobook Know Your Newlywed, written by Heather Taylor and Hillary Nussbaum and starring Tyler Posey and Mary Mouser.[11] Her romantic-suspense novella I'm Gonna Get You Back was released as an audio-first work by Spotify Audiobooks on 14 October 2025, narrated by Connor Crais and Kelli Tager.[12] The novella was subsequently made available in ebook and print formats.[13] Armas's first paranormal romance, Alma Vampires, is scheduled for publication by Berkley on 17 November 2026. It is the first book in her Icarus University series.[14]

Reception

Armas's novels have generally received positive notices from the romance trade press, particularly for their slow-burn relationships, romantic tension, and characterization. Her debut, The Spanish Love Deception, received a positive review from Publishers Weekly, which praised the chemistry between its protagonists, their gradual transition from antagonism to romance, and the use of the Spanish setting.[15] The publication described Armas's protagonists as witty and intelligent and concluded that the novel would appeal strongly to romantic-comedy readers.[15]

The novel also became closely associated with the influence of BookTok on contemporary publishing. In a 2022 examination of social media's growing role in the book industry, The Guardian cited The Spanish Love Deception as an example of a book whose commercial longevity had been driven by TikTok recommendations, noting that it had returned to bestseller lists more than a year after its original publication.[16] Publishers Weekly sales data similarly recorded the Atria edition of the novel reaching number three on its trade paperback chart in February 2022 and remaining on the list for subsequent months.[17]

Her second novel, The American Roommate Experiment, also received a positive review from Publishers Weekly. The magazine praised Armas's handling of the developing relationship between Rosie Graham and Lucas Martín, particularly the way romantic tension drives the narrative, and characterized the novel as an effective standalone follow-up to her debut.[18] The book also appeared on Publishers Weekly's romance bestseller rankings, reaching number four when it entered the chart in September 2022.[19]

Critical response remained favorable with The Long Game. Publishers Weekly praised the characterization of Adalyn Reyes and Cameron Caldani and the pacing of their enemies-to-lovers relationship, while also highlighting the novel's combination of humor, romance, and small-town setting.[20] The novel debuted at number nine on the publication's trade paperback bestseller list in September 2023.[21]

The Fiancé Dilemma received similarly positive attention from Publishers Weekly, which described Armas's use of the fake-engagement trope as particularly effective and praised the plausibility of Josie Moore's insecurities, Matthew Flanagan's characterization, the dialogue, and the novel's sexual chemistry.[22] Reception was not uniformly positive, however. Writing in the Pakistani newspaper Dawn, Rehana Alam described the novel's prose as accessible and breezy but criticized what she regarded as exaggerated emotions, extensive explanation of the characters' motivations, and reliance on conventional gender roles in its depiction of romantic relationships. Alam also noted the increasing prominence of explicit sexual material in the second half of the novel.[23]

Commentators have also situated Armas within the broader rise of romance authors whose careers have been shaped by online reading communities. Publishers Weekly has referred to her as a "BookTok success story" in its coverage of contemporary romance publishing, while discussing her work in the context of changing expectations surrounding romantic heroes and genre conventions.[24]

Impact

By September 2023, El País reported that Armas's books had sold more than one million copies worldwide.[1]

Simon & Schuster describes The Spanish Love Deception, The American Roommate Experiment, and The Long Game as New York Times bestsellers and states that Armas's books have been translated into more than 30 languages.[25]

Writing style and themes

Armas is particularly associated with slow-burn romance, in which romantic relationships develop gradually over the course of the narrative.[1][4] Her novels frequently use established romantic-comedy conventions, including fake dating, enemies-to-lovers relationships, roommates, sports romance, and engagements of convenience.[6][9][10]

Although Spanish is her native language, Armas writes her novels in English. She has said that after living abroad for several years and reading most of her romance fiction in English, writing fiction in that language felt more natural to her.[1][4]

Her professional background in engineering has also informed some of her work. Armas has described The Spanish Love Deception as a STEM romance at its core and has noted that early versions of the novel contained more material drawn from her experience working as an engineer.[5]
