Edward Maeder is an American textile historian. He was the curator of costumes and textiles at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) from 1979 to 1993.
Early life and education
[edit]Maeder grew up in a small town in northern Wisconsin with a population of 130. For his some of his elementary education, he attended a one-room schoolhouse. He became interested in textiles at an early age, embroidering by age three and knitting by age five.[1]
Maeder studied theater and art history at the University of Wisconsin.[2] He went on to earn a MA at the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London.[3]
Career
[edit]In 1979, Maeder became the curator of costumes and textiles at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). During his time at the museum, he oversaw 36 exhibitions and increased the costumes and textiles collections from 30,000 to 60,000 objects.[3]

In 1993, Maeder resigned to become the founding director of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto. The museum holds the world's largest international shoe collection with 9,000 pairs of shoes from around the world including from Native American, Siberian, Inuit, and Lapp cultures.[3]
From March 31 - July 17, 1994 LACMA had an exhibition in tribute to Maeder titled In Celebration: Fifteen Years of Collecting Costumes and Textiles (1979-1993).[3]
