Comment: Probably notable, but need to remove the primary sources with secondary sources. Stuartyeates (talk) 21:23, 20 June 2026 (UTC)
EXR is a massive multiplayer online game environment specific for indoor rowing, based on the Unity engine. It allows users to row in several virtual worlds and interact with each other. It supports unstructured rows, structured training plans and racing. EXR has been named as one of the best rowing apps by JRN.news.[1] and World Rowing[2]
Development
[edit]It was created in by a group of Digital Arts and Entertainment students in 2021 with support of the Flemish Rowing Liga and the Flemish Government[3]. When the product seemed viable, this became the startup Salty Lemon Entertainment that runs EXR until today.
The first version was released to the public in September 2021. Major improvements since then:
- Introduction of massive multiplayer mode (September 2022)[4]
- Introduction of the Henley track (June 2023)[5]
- Introduction of competition mode (September 2023)[6]
- Introduction of organized group rows(November 2023)[7]
New versions are published at the first Monday of the month, where these releases alternate between major functional release and minor bugfux releases.
Available worlds
[edit]There are several distinct worlds available:
- the Boston Boston Head of the Charles race course and the environment, including fictitious expansions,
- Slovenia's Lake Bled world championship course with fictitious expansions,
- Henley royal regatta race course and fictitious expansions,
- the totally fictious EXR world.
Each world contains at least 10 courses with varying distances before looping onto themselves. Courses vary from 0.7 to 42.2 kilometers.
Supported rowing machines
[edit]EXR connects to the indoor rowing machine via Bluetooth. Supported machines are the Concept2, RowPerfect and all Bluetooth FTMS based rowing machines. For the Bluetooth FTMS connection, practical results might vary as standardization in the rowing industry hasn't reached a mature stage yet.
EXR as online competition platform
[edit]EXR has been used as a showcase for demonstrating indoor rowing as an esport to the International Olympic Committee in 2023[8]. In 2024 EXR and the Japanese sport council hosted 15,000 participants to celebrate the legacy of the 1964 Tokyo olympics[9].
In 2025 EXR teamed up with British Rowing where rowers could qualify online for an invitational event at the British Indoor Rowing Championships (BIRC) in Birmingham.[10]
Notable ambassadors
[edit]EXR ambassadors include:
- Ward Lemmelijn, reigning world champion indoor rowing 2000 meters
- Oliver Zeidler, reigning Olympic and world champion in the men's single sculls[11]
- Karolien Florijn, reigning Olympic and world champion in the women's single sculls
- Simon van Dorp, Olympic and world championships medal winner men's single sculls[12]
Partnerships
[edit]EXR currently is supported by the Flemish Rowing Liga[13], British Rowing[14] and World Rowing[15]
