[edit]Dynamo Fencing is Canada's largest fencing club that was founded in 1998 in Vancouver, British Columbia. It is one of nine in Canada and the only High Performance Fencing Centre recognized by Canadian Fencing Federation (CFF) in Western Canada. [1] The club operates three training facilities in the Greater Vancouver area — in Richmond (flagship, opened 2015), North Vancouver (opened 2019), and Gastown, Vancouver (opened 2024).[2]
Dynamo Fencing has been a host of the only World Cup in North America sanctioned by International Fencing Federation (FIE). Vancouver Fencing World Cup is a partnership between Dynamo Fencing, the Canadian Fencing Federation, the British Columbia Fencing Association, and the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE).[3][4][5]
Dynamo Fencing athlete's have been dominating National Team. In 2025, Dynamo Fencing Club athletes held 17 of 28 available spots on the Canadian Cadet and Junior National Team, 61 per cent of Team Canada's positions in the foil and épée disciplines.[6] Eleanor Harvey, who trained at Dynamo, won a bronze medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics, becoming the first Canadian fencer to win an Olympic medal.[7] Nicholas Zhang, also a Dynamo athlete, competed at the same Games as the youngest Canadian male fencer in his discipline.[8]
History
[edit]Founded in 1998, Dynamo Fencing originally operated at University of British Columbia (UBC) headed by Maitre Victor Gantsevich. Athletes initially trained outdoors and then a spot at the rowing club was secured. In 2005 the club moved to the Sea Island Elementary School where an official program started.
In 2007, Dynamo Fencing bought and moved to its own building, a 3,800-square-foot space in a Richmond industrial park, funded in part through personal loans taken out by Victor Gantsevich. The club then got expended to North Vancouver (2020), Gastown (2024) and now opening its first location in USA - Austin. Texas (2026). [2]
International significance
[edit]Dynamo Fencing Club's international significance began when it hosted the firs men's epee Grand Prix at the Richmond Olympic Oval in 2013, one of only three such Grand Prix events held globally that season.[3] The event attracted 85 of the world's top-ranked épée fencers, including reigning Olympic champion Ruben Limardo of Venezuela and London 2012 Olympic medalists from Norway and South Korea. Victor Gantsevich's connections within the FIE were credited with securing the event for Canada after the longtime Stockholm host encountered financial difficulties.[3]
Since then, Dynamo Fencing has been hosting annual FIE Vancouver Fencing World Cup. [4][5] The event draws over 500 athletes from around the world, including Olympians, and has grown from a men's épée competition into a combined men's and women's épée event. In May 2025, Dynamo additionally hosted a Foil World Cup in Vancouver.
2019 was a significant year as over 25 Dynamo Fencing athletes competed at the North American Cup in Milwaukee and won 6 medals in 3 different weapons.[9]
National Team representation

2019 Canada Cup 1, Dynamo Fencing athletes earned 24 media;s across all three disciplines and the medal count grows each year, now averaging at 30+ medals each national event.[10] Dynamo athletes have also achieved international results abroad, including six medals at the North American Cup in Milwaukee, a gold medal for Tamar Gordon at the French National Circuit event, and a ninth-place finish for Canada in Team Men's Épée at a World Cup event in Riga, Latvia, with Dynamo fencers Fynn Fafard and Seraphim Jarov on the squad.[11]
2025 Wuxi World Championships was the largest Dynamo Fencing athlete representation on Team Canada to date with 17 of the 28 spots on Cadet and Junior Team, representing 61% qualification. [6] Nicholas Zhang - the youngest Olympian on Team Canada at Paris 2024); Simon Shan - U20 NAC champion and the youngest athlete to hold that title; Bowen Xu - World Championships Bronze medalist in U15 foil. Notable athletes
[edit]Dynamo Fencing athletes and coaches have been representing Canada at major international events from regional tournaments to the Olympics. These are some of the most decorated athletes:
- Eleanor Harvey a 3x Olympian and a bronze medalist at the 2024 Summer Olympics and the first Canadian fencer to win an Olympic medal.[7]
- Nicholas Zhang the youngest Team Canada's athlete at the Paris 2024 Games2024 Summer Olympics. [8][13][14]
- Shaul Gordon a 3x Olympian and the top qualifier in the Pan American zone for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.[9]

West Vancouver Schools Fencing Academy
[edit]Dynamo Fencing has formally partnered with West Vancouver Schools in 2014 to establish Premier Fencing Academy.[16] Students in the programme train twice daily while completing their secondary education. The academy has produced multiple Olympians and international competitors; graduates have gone on to compete on varsity fencing teams at universities across North America, including Ivy League institutions.[8][9]
Youth development and pathway to elite competition
[edit]The programs at Dynamo Fencing range from competitive streams to recreational and beginner adults looking for a unique workout. [12] The club focuses it's programs on building confidence, discipline and passion. These approach allows to create a pathway for kids starting 4 years old from beginner classes to Olympic level competition. Nicholas Zhang started fencing at Dynamo Fencing at 11 years old and 10 years later he became the youngest olympian on Team Canada and Harvard University student. [8][14] CTV News described his trajectory as going "from beginner to Olympian."[14] The Richmond Sentinel has described Dynamo as "Canada's largest and most recognized fencing club," noting that nearly a quarter of Canada's national team has trained there.[17]
