Duo Kitharsis is a Romanian classical guitar duo formed in 2009 by guitarists Alexandra Petrișor and Dragoș Horghidan.[1]
History
[edit]Duo Kitharsis was formed in 2009 by Romanian classical guitarists Alexandra Petrișor and Dragoș Horghidan.[1]
The musicians studied classical guitar in Romania and subsequently continued their studies in Germany and France. They specialized in guitar duo performance in Strasbourg, where they studied with Alexis Muzurakis and Susana Prieto of Duo Melis.[2]
Career
[edit]In 2014, Duo Kitharsis won first prize at the fifth edition of the Romanian chamber music competition Drumul spre celebritate.[3] The same year, the duo received the Grand Prix at the International Guitar Course and Competition in Olsztyn, Poland.[4]
In 2015, Petrișor and Horghidan performed Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Concerto for Two Guitars and Orchestra with the Radio Chamber Orchestra in Bucharest. Romanian sources described the performance as the Romanian premiere of the work.[2]
On 17 April 2018, Duo Kitharsis gave a lunchtime recital at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, representing the Romanian Cultural Institute.[5]
In May 2019, the duo appeared at the International Classical Guitar Festival in Zielona Góra, Poland. It performed in the opening concert with the Zielona Góra Philharmonic Orchestra and subsequently gave a recital at the Żagań Palace.[6]
Later that year, Duo Kitharsis appeared at the 10th Calcutta International Classical Guitar Festival in Kolkata, India. Ahead of the appearance, Indulge, a publication of The New Indian Express, published an interview with Petrișor and Horghidan about the formation of the duo, their musical influences and their work on arrangements of music by Frédéric Chopin.[7]
In June 2026, Duo Kitharsis gave two recitals in London, at the Romanian Cultural Institute as part of the Enescu Concert Series and at St Bartholomew-the-Great in a concert presented by the City Music Society.[8]
Repertoire and recordings
[edit]The duo's repertoire includes works originally composed for two guitars and its own arrangements. Radio România Muzical has discussed its performances of Romanian repertoire and transcriptions for two guitars.[1]
In 2020, the duo released Duo Kitharsis Plays Chopin, consisting of arrangements for two guitars of works by Chopin. It was followed by Romanian Tribute in 2022 and Fandango in 2023. The latter was presented in concerts in Spain in 2024.[9]
